September 2017

Fall has started, construction is underway on several projects, some new projects have come on board, and we have a new person in our office! Catch all the news below.

AIA NC Design Conference 2017

This year’s AIA NC Design Conference in Wilmington was a huge success! Many thanks to all who came to learn, connect, participate in the charrettes, and celebrate design! We are honored to have won three design awards for the Taylor ResidenceOcotea Residence, and Jubala Coffee. Congratulations to our friends and colleagues for their awards and honors. It was a great long weekend in a beautiful city!

Welcome Jackie!

This month we welcomed Jackie Tomlin to our team! Jackie grew up in Kernersville, NC before attending Appalachian State University. She graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design. While at Appalachian she worked on the 2011 Solar Decathlon and the 2014 Solar Decathlon Europe proposals. During her final year at ASU she participated in a design-build studio at Blackburn Farms in Ashe County. In 2016 she received a MArch from UNC Charlotte. While there she was a GASP Recipient and worked as a Research Assistant in the Integrated Design Research Lab. After graduating, she worked with Little Diversified Architectural Consulting, working on higher education projects, including the Case Commons Dormitory at NC State and the Admissions Building at Campbell University. When she is not “architecting” she likes to paint watercolors of woodland animals and old houses. She and her husband, Zack, live in downtown Raleigh and travel whenever possible. Jackie has jumped right in, joining us for new headshots by Keith Isaacs, building models, interfacing with clients, and providing a new burst of energy in the office!

Building a Nest – ILOOKUP Film Challenge

Erika Jolley and Jordan Gray of grayandjolley have produced a wonderful short film about Bida Manda and the impact it has had on the revitalization of the Moore Square District in downtown Raleigh. The film has been selected as finalist for the AIA ILOOKUP Film Challenge. Public voting continues through 10 06 17. Please check out their work and the other great films and vote for your favorite!

BOTM: “Black: Architecture in Monochrome” from Phaidon

Our book of the month is “Black: Architecture in Monochrome” from the editors at Phaidon. We were excited to learn than our Corbett Residence was included! The book catalogues a variety of building typologies and spaces around the world with works by Peter Zumthor, Pezo von Ellrichshausen, Todd Saunders, and Tham & Videgård, among others! Pick up your copy here after October 9th .

Song of the Month

For the September song of the month, we’ve chosen to feature Nobody Else Will Be Thereby The National. This is the opening song to the group’s most recent album, Sleep Well Beastthe front cover of which features the barn in which the album was recorded. The design for the album was done by Pentagram and is featured here on DezeenNobody Else Will Be There is a great example of a song introducing the intent of an entire album. This album has grown on us since its release earlier this month, and we now let out a collective “Guh” (in situan for “that is such a good sound”) when we hear the opening piano strike on this track.

Please contact us if there is any way we can help you.

Best.
