“Saltbox 02” is a backyard cottage that fits two bedrooms within a compact footprint. At only 18’ by 28.5’, the cottage can fit on the smallest sites in Raleigh while still enabling a generous back yard.


The downstairs has an efficient layout, with a double-height living room and kitchen, a bedroom, and a full bathroom. This downstairs bedroom enables a grandparent to age in place, or it can be used as an office or TV room for a single tenant.


Stacked above the downstairs layout is a second bedroom, a full bathroom, and a desk nook that overlooks the double-height living room. 


The kitchen and staircase create privacy between the ADU and the principal dwelling. A stacked washer-dryer, water heater, and flexible storage are located under the stairs. Throughout, windows and a skylight are located to allow ample daylight and views while maintaining privacy.


“Saltbox 02” is included on the City of Raleigh’s Raleigh ADU Fast Track Gallery as a standard plan that is ready for permit submission. Time required for design customizations and assistance with permitting will be billed at an hourly rate in addition to the plan set drawing fee listed on the City’s website.
