We have many exciting news items this month! Yesterday, on October 1, we celebrated our fourth birthday! Stay tuned for a birthday-related announcement later this month.
AIA NC Design Conference
Last week, Erin, Matt, and Jeremy attended the AIA NC Design Conference in Charlotte. Erin presented a talk with Frank Harmon and Catherine Hofmann about their Activate 14 initiative, and Erin and Matt attended daily sessions, including inspiring design-centered talks by Andres Duany of DPZ, Don Kranbuehl of Clark Nexsen,Daniel Snyder, and Juan Gabriel Moreno.
The conference culminated with the Design Awards Gala, where three of our projects were recognized – Honor Awards for a house named Fred and the Farmhouse and a Merit Award for the Chasen Residence. Congratulations to all the award winners and especially to Phil Szostak Design, recipient of the 2014 NC Firm of the Year Award!
Love and Happiness
This month, in situ celebrated a wedding! Mary got married! Mary and Justin Conley, a scientist, Kentuckian, and “in situ” brewmaster, tied the knot last weekend at Timberlake Earth Sanctuary in Whitsett, NC. It was a great weekend full of family, friends, sunshine, dancing, BBQ, and beer. The two lovebirds met in 2009 when they were neighbors living on Watson Street in Raleigh. We are so excited for them both and wish them lots of love in the coming years!
Activate 14 Urban Housing Conference
We displayed our investment in fostering a diversity of housing options in the Triangle at the Activate 14 Urban Housing Conference. Matt’s talk highlighted the Ten at South Person, the RA 50 Accessory Dwellings, and theChasen Residence as examples of scales of dwellings that can address the needs of most people. Jeremy and Mary’s entry in the internationally juried Live-Work Micro-Dwelling Competition, entitled “Stacking the Porch,” won the top prize! See Jeremy and Mary’s submission, and other winning entries, here.
The Ten at South Person
The Ten at South Person is underway! Site work started a couple of weeks ago, and slabs should be poured next week. We have really enjoyed the design collaboration with Perry Cox and our client, DHIC, and are so happy to see the project now coming out of the ground. Hilary Stokes has done a wonderful job marketing the project, and all ten units are spoken for. We are looking forward to working with Northview Construction as they assemble Raleigh’s first modern, multi-unit row house project! Follow progress on our Instagram account.
