Construction begins at Singerman!
Construction has begun at the Singerman residence! We’ve had the opportunity to design an addition to a wonderful Milton Small house inside the Raleigh belt line. Concrete basement and site walls anchor this new wing, which takes cues from the windows, siding, and scale of the original house. A simple glass bridge connects the old and the new with minimal disturbance to the original construction. We’re excited to have the opportunity to study and contribute to the work of such an important figure in Raleigh’s modernist history. Erin has been working with AIA Triangle ACTIVATE on an exciting 3-day architectural event called CONNECT-IONS 81.2, a 1-day design workshop that asks the question, “if Central Prison and The Governor Morehead School for the Blind were to be relocated or reimagined, what would that 81.2 acre site look like?” The workshop is bookended by talks from 5 key designers for New York City’s Hudson Yards project and a public presentation to present ideas from the workshop. In 2015, we had the opportunity to work with the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, NC on a Woodland Classroom, built by CT Wilson Construction Co. The museum is ready to expand their woodland campus and has brought us back on board to design two new classroom buildings and masterplan for future expansion! We absolutely love working with our friends at the museum and with CT Wilson and we’re grateful to have projects with clients doing such meaningful work. Upcoming events at the museum include a dinosaur egg hunt on April 1 and a workshop on gardening for bees on April 15 – go check them out!AIA Triangle Merit Award + Modapalooza
The Taylor Residence, completed in late 2016 in Charlotte NC, received a merit award from the American Institute of Architects Triangle Chapter last Thursday night. We are honored to be mentioned among other incredible buildings and architects. Congrats to all of the winners! The Kimball House, located in downtown Raleigh, will be a part of North Carolina Modernist Houses‘ 2018 Modapalooza Tour. The house is currently under construction, having just completed the ‘rough-in’ stage. We are excited to show one of our projects in the midst of construction and will be on site to answer any and all questions related to the design and the construction of modern homes. We were thrilled that the Moura Residence was featured in Midtown Magazine this month! The story focuses on the relationship between the house and the site, the sequence of arrival, the process of working with an HOA, and the differences between our design and that of neighboring houses. This was a very challenging and fun project, and we are thankful to Caroline and Danilo for working with us. And, Bob Aiello did a wonderful job building the house. As an added bonus, our great friend Vanvisa Nolintha, co-owner of Bida Manda, was on the front cover of the issue! The second readings on race book club meeting will be discussing The Color of Wealth on Thursday, April 05 at 7:00pm. First Baptist Church (101 S Wilmington St.) has generously offered us the use of their space again, and we’re humbled to be able to meet in an institution with such a rich racial history. So & So Books is offering The Color of Wealth at a 15% discount. Readings on race is a bimonthly book club that reads and meets to discuss books that deal with race relations in order to deepen our understanding of one another, our social, economic, and political circumstances, and the divisions we’ve seen come to light in recent years.
