Mississippi State University NOMAS Symposium
Last week, Erin and Matt journeyed to Starkville, Mississippi to be the featured speakers at the Mississippi State University College of Architecture Art + Design NOMAS Symposium. The topic of the symposium, which was organized by students, was “Identity in Architecture.” Erin and Matt participated on two panel discussions sparked by Kenneth Frampton’s influential essay, Critical Regionalism, and then gave a lecture on their work that outlined the relationship between originality in architecture and the aggregate site/client/history/culture/budget context.
A special thanks to the students for arranging such an enjoyable day of ideas and discussion, to Hans Herrmannfor the tour of Starkville and his recent student-built design-build collaboration with Cory Gallo, to DirectorMichael Berk for his hospitality, to John Poros and Leah Camp for their time at the Carl Small Town Center, and to Emily McGlohn, Alexis Gregory, Erik Herman, and Andrew Tripp for great dinner conversations! Activate 14
Erin has been working with AIA NC’s Activate 14 on an exciting open house and panel discussion about 3D printing and its impact on the design world – from buildings to shoes! The panel discussion includes representatives from NCSU School of Architecture, Duda Paine Architects, Perkins and Will, and gamil design. The event is Thursday, April 16th at 5:30pm at the AIA NC Center for Architecture and Design. The event is free and open to the public, but participants are asked to RSVP.
Song of the Month – “My Baby Don’t Understand Me”
Music is a constant presence in our office. Our song of the month is Natalie Prass’ exquisite “My Baby Don’t Understand Me,” a soulful slow-burner delineated by swelling movements of horns and strings. Catch her on April 17 at the Haw River Ballroom with headliner Hiss Golden Messenger!
Book of the Month: “Louis I. Kahn” by Robert McCarter
Louis Kahn casts a long shadow over many architects. Part biography, part monograph, this tome details the development of his work and ideology through process sketches, models and consummate photographs. AsKahn once said, “the sun never knew how great it is until it struck the side of a building,” and we tend to agree.
