2018 Matsumoto Award
We are happy to have the Taylor Residence included in the the 2018 North Carolina Modernist HousesMatsumoto Prize competition. The Matsumoto Prize was created in honor of George Matsumoto to recognize great modern homes built in North Carolina in the last five years. Office Trip to NYC!
Last week our office traveled to NYC to the 2018 AIA National Conference to celebrate Erin, who is a recipient of the 2018 AIA Young Architect’s Award. Walking an average of over ten miles a day and armed with recommendations form several current clients, we ate at some amazing restaurants, heard live jazz at Small’s, saw two many amazing buildings to recount, and visited with great friends and previous in situ studio mates, Oz and Jeremy. We want to give a special shout out to a number of people and design offices who welcomed us in along the way: Adam and Matt at ARCHITECTUREFIRM, Eliza at Ennead Architects, Thomas at NBWLA, Will at Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, Jeremy at SHoP Architects, and Wilson at Tom Phifer and Partners. We had an amazing four days in the city and can’t wait to get back!
Allin Groundbreaking
Construction on the Allin Residence is about to begin! We had a great kickoff meeting on site this month with our clients, consultant Gregg Bleam Landscape Architect, and contractor Durham Potter. We are so grateful for our clients and the amazing collaboration we have enjoyed while creating a home for them in the woods. Stay tuned!Brittany Siegert
We have a summer intern! Brittany Siegert was a student of Matt’s and Jake’s last spring, where she excelled in design, craft, and critical thinking. Brittany is from Clayton, NC, and is a rising 4th year at NCSU. She has already played a big role in the office, taking on a rockite, brass, and steel model of a pavilion at NCMA, diagrams for a new masterplanning project with the Town of Cary, and has just completed her first ever redline on a house near Duke Forest (photo above)!Trull Residence
The Trull Residence in Cary has been featured in a number of on-line articles over the past month, including appearances in Architect Magazine, Dwell, Dezeen, and Archdaily. The house was very fun to work on because of the small, challenging site, the opportunity to work with CMU, and great clients! The photography in the articles is by Keith Isaacs, who perfectly captured the atmosphere of the house last November. Thanks to the writers for featuring our work, Chuck Lysaght’s office for their structural prowess, Bob Aiello for doing an amazing job building the house, Bob Drake of Trig Modern for help with staging, Keith for always making us look so good, and Michael and Sandy for being wonderful clients!Readings on Race
The next readings on race book club meeting will be discussing Nobody, by Marc Lamont Hill, on Thursday, August 23 at 7:00pm. First Baptist Church has generously offered us the use of their space again, and we’re thrilled to be able to meet in an institution with such a rich racial history. So & So Books is offering Nobody at a 15% discount. Readings on race is a bimonthly book club that reads and meets to discuss books that deal with race relations in order to deepen our understanding of one another, our social, economic, and political circumstances, and the divisions we’ve seen come to light in recent years.
