June 2015

June was an exciting month, with Zach joining our team and many updates to our projects!  Take a look at what we’ve been up to on our updated website! And, if you haven’t voted yet for your favorite house for the North Carolina Modernist Houses Matsumoto prize, please do so hereFarmhouse and Clark Court are in the mix!

New Projects on the Website!

Two weeks ago, we survived scorching temperatures during a photo shoot with Richard Leo Johnson of Atlantic Archives.  The shoot captured:
  • Gallo Pelón, a mezcal bar paired with a renovation to the upstairs dining space of a downtown Raleigh favorite, Centro
  • BREW, a friendly coffee shop and hangout in Seaboard Station that serves fantastic coffee, beer, and other delights
  • the NCSU Pergola, which updates an existing bus stop to provide shelter from the rain
  • GoJoe, a mobile cart and music box for Jubala Coffee
We are thankful for great clients who allowed us to photograph the spaces we created with them. And, we love working with Richard!  In addition to being an excellent photographer, he is an amazing musician. To hear his latest album, click here.

Zach Hoffman
We are excited to announce that Zach Hoffman has joined our office as a designer! Zach graduated with Honors from Appalachian State University in 2011 with a degree in Building Science. While there, he worked on the 2011 Solar Decathlon and received the Building Science Award for Design Achievement. He completed his Masters in Architecture at the NCSU College of Design in 2014, where he worked on the Benevolence Barn in Graham County with the 2014 Design Build Studio. Zach has worked for Cannon Architects for the last 3 years, including work on the Penland 2D2 Studio. A talented designer, Zach has already cut his teeth on many of our projects.  Welcome, Zach!

Residential Projects Update
Construction on two residential projects is wrapping up this month. Millwork by Elijah Leed is almost complete at the Corbett Residence, and it looks amazing.  Many thanks to Elijah and his team for their beautiful and meticulous work.  And, special thanks to our contractor, Bob Aiello! The Medlin Residence, which has been a fantastic collaboration with contractor, Kemp Harris, cabinet maker, Jeff Dopko, and landscape architect, Corey Mason, is also nearly complete.  Thanks to everyone for your hard work!

The Ten at South Person
Construction of our first multi-family project, The Ten at South Person, is set to wrap up in the next month! The exterior finishes are underway on the project and will culminate with the installation of stained cedar tongue and groove siding on the Person Street facade. Northview Construction has done great work corralling their subcontractors to produce a truly unique housing alternative in downtown Raleigh. Thanks to DHIC for the opportunity, Hilary Stokes for marketing and selling the project, and Perry Cox for being a great design partner! We are thrilled to be this close and are excited for those who will soon be in their homes!

Poinsettia
Over the past year, guitarist and singer Vincent Whitehurst of architecture and Foundation Bar fame, bassist Finley Lee, and Matt (drums) have been cultivating the sound of their band, Poinsettia. On Sunday, the trio had their first show, at Neptune’s Parlour, opening for the incomparable Gray Young. The set for the show included twelve original songs, and over seventy-five people came out in support. For Matt, this was his first ever live performance of original music – he powered through the nerves and had a blast! You can stay abreast of Poinsettia’s exploits on FacebookInstagram, and Twitter. Song of the Month: “All Under One Roof Raving” – Jamie xx
Our Song of the Month is Jamie xx’s All Under One Roof Raving, a collage of London rave and hardcore, meshed together with a melancholy steel drum riff.  We especially love the creaky beat that sneaks in midway through the song.
