Readings on Race
Readings on Race is a new book club, co-founded by Jake, that meets bi-monthly to discuss issues of race and race relations. The ambition of these meetings is to deepen our understanding of one another, our social, economic, and political circumstances, and the divisions that have come to light in recent years. The first meeting is at 7:00pm on February 8th at First Baptist Church on Wilmington St. The featured book is Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, an influential lawyer, author, and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative. We are out of the ground on a new home on Runnymede. The site affords one of the best views in Raleigh, looking out on two George Matsumoto houses! The house we’ve designed is lifted above the sloped front yard on concrete walls, with two private spaces perpendicular to the street cradling an open living space. Kid spaces are perched above in a separate volume that rests atop the volumes of the main floor. We are working with John C. Sanders & Co., who are doing an incredible job. Special thanks to our clients for their passion for architecture. We can’t wait to see framing begin in the next couple of weeks – stay tuned!
Lamb Residence
We are nearing completion of the Lamb Residence in Chatham County! We have enjoyed working with our incredible clients, Durham Potter (contractor), Xylem (millwork), and Ann Marie Baum of Baum Shelter (interiors). We are looking forward to seeing the landscape and reflecting pool installed soon!
Kimball Residence
The Kimball house on North Swain Street in East Raleigh is nearly framed, thanks to Bob Aiello and his crew! We are thrilled to be able to walk through the house and see the spaces coming to life. The two porches on the south side of the house are taking shape, and we look forward to the installation of a two-story slatted screen to filter light into the double-height exterior space on the second floor. In addition, Tactile Workshop is hard at work on a delicate steel stair that rises through a void in the center of the house toward a large skylight. If you’d like to get a closer look at this project, North Carolina Modernist Houses has included this house on its April 7th Modapalooza Tour, along with a collection of other modern houses in the Triangle!
NCSU
Jake and Matt are co-teaching a studio at the NCSU College of Design this semester. So far, the students have completed a precedent study of a handful of amazing projects, considering each through five “lenses” – program, orientation, circulation, structure, and enclosure. The projects studied were the Clyfford Still Museum by Allied Works, Mediatheque Sendai by Toyo Ito, Crematorium Hofheide by RCR Arquitectes, Wyly Theatre by REX/OMA, the Poetry Foundation by John Ronan Architects, and the Barnes Foundation by TWBTA. The students, who are doing incredible work so far, are just starting their work on the major project of the semester – a themed, boutique hotel on one of three sites near downtown Raleigh.
Album of the Month
Our Album of the Month is “Offerings,” the new release from office “go-to” band Typhoon. When they played at Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro a few years ago, we made it an office outing and had a blast. When they played at the same venue this year (last night), in situ studio represented again – at least in part. Their newest album, Offerings, is inspired by diverse works of art – from Nabokov’s novel, Pnin, to Beyonce’s Lemonade.
