March 2014

Greetings from in situ studio!  We had a very action-packed month, with one house finishing construction and another house about to start construction!

Oz

As many of you already know, Ashley Ozburn’s last day in our office was last Tuesday. She has left for a new and exciting position at Studio Gang in Chicago – what an opportunity! In her time here, she contributed to the life, fun, and culture of the office and numerous projects, including StirhausCentury 21 Triangle Group, and the Sillings Residence. She has also helped connect us with the NCSU COD through teaching and the community through efforts like Activate 14.  Our clients and we are really going to miss her!

Medlin House

We are very excited to have finished the design of the Medlin House! Construction will start in April, and the house should be complete in early 2015.  This will be our second collaboration with Kemp Harris, Inc. Follow us on InstagramFacebook, and Twitter for the latest updates once the project breaks ground!

Sillings Residence

The house at Sillings Farm is complete! Thanks to Ashley Ozburn for her amazing work making this project a success and to Kemp Harris, Inc. for the their efforts to execute even the smallest detail to high level of quality. Ryan, Christine, and the kids have already moved in, and we are so thankful to have had the chance to work with them! We’ll be photographing the house in May, so stay tuned.

Thirst For Architecture

We are looking forward to hosting North Carolina Modernist House‘s May T4A event at our studio again this year on 05 15 14 from 6-8 pm. Last year’s party was a ton of fun, and we are sure this year will be no different! So, mark it on your calendar and stay up to date on developments via Facebook. It’s gonna be a fun evening of architecture, great people, good food, and drink!

Project Bauhow

This month, Erin visited two high schools participating in North Carolina Modernist House’s Project BauHow.“With support from the Kramden Institute, NCMH’s Project BauHow supports high school education through providing desktop  CAD computers and software to ninth and tenth graders around North Carolina.   Students then have an opportunity to test their learning through a design competition featuring a Modernist house.”While at McMichael High School in Mayodan, NC and Washington High School in Washington, NC, Erin spoke to students about the practice of architecture and even had the opportunity to sit down with several students to review their home designs for the upcoming Matsumoto Awards!

Materials for Design

Thanks to Victoria Ballard Bell and J. Patrick Rand for coming to our studio for a book signing and reception celebrating their new book, Materials For Design 2, on 03 05 14, hosted by So and So Books. Dozens of folks from the design and literature communities joined us, and Victoria and Pat gave an inspiring talk about the importance of materials in architecture. Learn more about the ideas behind the book at Victoria’s blog,Materials For Design.

Please contact us if there is any way we can help you.

February 2014

Greetings from in situ studio! We have had a very exciting month, with one house nearing completion and another house about to start construction! Take a look at what we’ve been up to here or on our website!

BREW Coffee Bar

We are having a great time working with AJ Viola and Mike Sholar to design an incredible space in Seaboard Station for their new bar, BREW. Their concept for the bar is very unique, focusing on Raleigh’s best brewed beer AND coffee – an all day offering! And, it is right next door to our favorite Seaboard lunch spot, Kimbap. Follow developments on their Facebook page, Twitter feed, and Instagram account. Thanks, Mike and AJ, for the opportunity!

Medlin Residence

The Medlin Residence will soon begin construction!  We have had a wonderful time working with our clients, who have diligently brought us beautiful precedent images and who insisted upon simple, open spaces. The house is a compact L-shaped scheme that creates a courtyard between the house and hillside, with a series of additions and subtractions that extend the house into the landscape. Thanks to Kemp Harris, our builder, and Jeff Dopko, cabinet maker extraordinaire, who are both collaborating with us on the Sillings Residence and are doing fantastic work. We look forward to working with them again!

Walter Magazine

Walter Magazine has published a wonderful article that features Matt and Erin, as well as many of our friends and colleagues in town!  In author J. Michael Welton’s words, “…the seven architects’ offices described here all demonstrate a commitment to downtown Raleigh – and to good design…and they all have one central source of inspiration: whether student, professor or designer, each of the architects represented here is directly linked to the College of Design at N.C. State University – and to its legacy of creating great spaces for the citizens of this city.”  Check out the article here.

Urban Design Conference

On Friday, March 7th, Matt and Erin will be presenting at the 11th annual Urban Design Conference in Raleigh. The case study presentation is called Infill: Modern Urban Living, featuring The Ten at South Person Street, which is slated to start construction this spring! Our favorite competition partner, David Hill, AIA will also be presenting The RA-50 Accessory Dwelling Unit with us. RA-50 was the result of a Building Trust International competition we worked on with David in 2013. Density in Place: Design Works, is this year’s theme for the conference, and we are honored to have two projects to speak about!

Activate 14

Oz and Erin have been working with AIA NC and the Center for Architecture and Design on an exciting summer event series, called Activate 14. Working closely with the primary sponsor, Frank Harmon Architect and Kim Weiss of blue plate pr, an exciting summer is in store! The series will focus on design-based solutions for challenges facing cities in North Carolina. Topics for each of the 4 events to be held June through September are: Designing for the Next Generation, Sustainable Foodways, Alternative Transportation, and Urban Housing. Events will include talks, breakout sessions, drawing, auctions, food, music, art, children’s events, and more! The series kicks off with a design build competition for a structure to be built on the grounds of the Center for Architecture and Design. Be sure to visit the website for more information.

Detail of the Month – Medlin Residence Dining Room Cantilever

Where We’re From: Jeremy

My journey to become an architect is rooted in my desire to become more aware of my surroundings. Growing up in Raleigh, Schenck Forest was a haven for my family. It was always a lucky summer day when we would trek through the trails, the sounds of cars fading into the rustle of leaves under our feet. The trail led back to a glen of pine trees, which is still one of the most enchanting places on Earth. Standing beneath the pines, the calming cadence of tall, dark tree trunks is accentuated by the dance of dappled light on a bed of bright green grass. It’s as magnificent as any European cathedral.

When I was young, my parents would take me to the Rocky Branch Creek, a stream near downtown Raleigh that was isolated from its surroundings by a shady patch of forest. We would sit on the boulders by the bank, eating lunch and dipping our toes in the water. I was shocked the day my mom and I drove past the creek to see a construction crew tearing it up to make room for the expansion of Western Boulevard. The destruction of that segment of the Rocky Branch Creek by heavy machinery profoundly influenced my respect for the power of human destruction and the fragility of beautiful things.

The Tracking Station Beach my family frequented in Vero Beach, Florida was so scary to me because it looked safe, but there was so much wilderness below the surface, and such inconstancy in the ebb and flow of the tide. Most of the time, I stayed firmly planted on the shore building sand castles. Back then, I was always afraid to wade in past my waist because I feared the unknown (and sharks!), and I defined a boundary because the water didn’t have one. These days, I just jump in.

January 2014

Happy New Year from in situ studio!  We hope everyone has stayed warm during this incredibly cold month, snow and all! All of us here at 704 N. Person Street are excited about what 2014 has in store! With many new projects, and several others under construction, this year is looking busy! So grab a cup of coffee, hot chocolate, or whatever warms you up, and check out below to see what is already taking shape in 2014 and read our latest installation of our “Where We’re From” Series!

Book of the Month- Materials For Design

We are very excited to be co-hosting a book signing with So & So Books, featuring Victoria Ballard Bell and Patrick Rand and their new book, Materials For Design 2! The event is scheduled for 7:00 pm on Wednesday, 03 05 14. We will have food, drink, music, and books.  Please join us to celebrate the release of the second installment of this important book series that bridges the gap between design sensibility and technical expertise.

Century 21 Triangle Group

Construction has started on our design for the Century 21 Triangle Group space in North Hills! When finished, this space will present a new model for realty – a flexible work space that provides work stations for realtors on the go and engages customers with an active and accessible work environment, interactive technology, and a coffee lounge. Thanks to our entire design team, Lysaght & AssociatesDiversified Consulting Group, and Crawford Sprinkler Company, for a wonderful collaboration, an incredibly quick turn around, and a successful first pass at an express review permit. And, we look forward to working again with Southeastern Properties and Development Company (they built Bida Manda) to have the doors open by April. Thanks, Dan and Stephen, for this incredible opportunity!

Sillings Residence

The Sillings Residence is a month away from completion! We are so excited see each space take shape with painted drywall, wood flooring, and next week, new cabinets by Dopko Cabinetry and Kitchen & Bath Galleries! The metal roof is looking fantastic and brings the whole project together. Special thanks to our contractor Kemp Harris for all the great work he is doing!

Pittsboro Performance Factory

StreetSigns is collaborating with in situ studio toward a vision of bringing performance and the arts to underutilized portions of the Chatham Mills development in Pittsboro!  The programmatic volumes are arranged as “boxes within a box” so that the volume of the space remains palpable and the undisturbed walls of windows let in natural light.  The old mill will become a new home for StreetSigns Center for Literature and Performance, a twenty-two-year-old professional theatre company based in Pittsboro but operating without a home theater; Harland’s Creek Productions, a film development company; a contemporary art gallery; and a multi-purpose event space with a catering kitchen to support community gatherings and pop-up restaurants. Visit our website to find out more about the Pittsboro Performance Factory and the wonderful visionaries behind the project!

Stirhaus + LAB

We are excited to announce a wonderful new project: the expansion of Lexington Avenue Brewery and the creation of Stirhaus, a restaurant created around local produce and the wok, in Asheville, North Carolina. We have been working on this project for a the past few months and are pumped to be halfway into the Design Development Phase. With a great team of consultants, including Mark Allison, AIA, Tilden White & Associates, McDonald Structural Engineering, and others, the project is really shaping up! We are having a blast learning about the brewing process and love making trips to Asheville! Stay updated with the project by checking out our website

Cub Scout Architecture Presentation

Recently, Erin was a special guest at a local cub scout troop meeting, where she was asked to talk about architecture and what architects do. The scouts were full of interesting, insightful questions, and are now on their way to earning new badges! Two favorite questions: 1. “How do you determine how much money you get paid?” 2. “What was the most important building your firm has ever designed?” We are thankful for any opportunity to share the value of architects and architecture with children!

Where We’re From: Erin

When I was three years old, the Sterling family relocated from Lindenhurst, Illinois to Yazoo City, Mississippi. Yazoo City, known to some as “Gateway to the Delta”, geographically straddles the line between fields of delta and hills of windblown loess. My family lived in an area called Enchanted Hills at the end of Moonmist Drive. Our backyard was any child’s dream and included a sixty-foot tall cliff whose loess soil face was the backdrop to our simple, slab on grade yellow house with a brown shingled roof. My siblings and I knew every inch of that cliff and all that lay behind. We built forts and carved caves into the hills of leaves we slid down on our sleds. There was a creek down the street where countless hours were spent wading through muddy water, looking for treasures, and trying to find the end. My best friend lived in the country off Lake City Road on the other side of downtown. Her house sat between Wolf Lake and cotton fields. The still waters of Wolf Lake were lined with cypress trees. The cotton fields seemed miles deep.

Two of my favorite buildings were Ricks Memorial Library and St. Mary’s Catholic Church, both on Main Street. Broadway, my favorite street, was one of the steepest in the city, as it connected the hills and the delta. At the bottom of the hill Broadway acted as a border between historic downtown and the original residential areas. Our grocery store, Jitney Jungle, was located there surrounded by some of the most beautiful old homes in the city.

Yazoo City is where I was introduced to creeks, cotton, catfish, and kudzu. It is a place of rich history and culture, and recently became part of the Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area. If you find yourself in that neck of the woods, don’t miss grabbing a bite to eat at the Hastee Tastee on the corner of Graball Freerun Road and Jerry Clower Boulevard.

NOVEMBER 2013

Happy Thanksgiving from in situ studio!

As November wraps up and we rush off to be with family, we can’t help but think of all that has happened this year: a new office space, two new studio mates, one new license, lots of new clients, neighbors and friends, teaching, trips, and much, much more! We can’t say enough about how much we appreciate our clients and the fabulous design community that keeps this city moving! See below for some of our projects and community involvement, as well as a new series we are starting: Where We’re From. We are so thankful for the wonderful city of Raleigh and thought we’d take a look at how we all ended up here!

DHIC

We are very excited to have received unanimous planning commission approval for the Person Street Townhouses!  Our nearly two-year collaboration with DHIC, Inc. and Perry Cox Design has resulted in a new housing scenario for downtown Raleigh – modern, efficient, urban, and within minutes on foot from downtown.  And, the project now also has a name – The Ten at South Person.  For sales inquiries, contact Hilary Stokes of Allen Tate Realtors.

Exploris Middle School

Our office was thrilled to help judge the 5th Annual Model Water Tower Competition at Exploris Middle School!  Prior to the official judging, we came to give advice to the teams of 8th graders, challenging groups to develop sturdy structures while maintaining robust aesthetic concepts.  Water towers were judged based on four criteria: structural efficiency, hydraulic efficiency, cost efficiency, and design ingenuity.  We were really excited to see the enthusiasm and dedication to craft that teams brought to their projects.  We hope the students will consider studying design!!

Saturday Seminar by AIA NC Center for Architecture and Design

Don’t miss the last of the How We Live Series: Beyond the Single Family House – featuring our very own Matt Griffith, on December 7th at 10am at the AIA NC CfAD! Joining Matt will be Tina GovanMatt Tomasulo and Robin MooreSpeakers will discuss how we should embrace urban domestic life and the importance of variety in cost, format, and value of housing in the city. Raleigh is one of many cities in the nation experiencing rapid growth and increasing density. We hope you will take the opportunity to hear some of our city’s dedicated citizens discuss what this means for us, and participate in a discussion afterwards as well.

Public Interest Design Institute

Raleigh is fortunate to be hosting the upcoming Public Interest Design Institute on December 13-14 at the AIA NC CfAD.  The institute is organized by Bryan Bell of Design Corps and provides design and planning professionals with the opportunity for in-depth study of how design can address the most pressing needs of any community.  The curriculum is tied to the SEED metric, a set of standards that assesses the social, economic, and environmental impact of design projects.  Instructors at the institute this year are Bryan Bell, Ryan Gravel of Perkins + Will, Joseph Minicozzi of Urban 3, Rachel Minnery of Architecture for Humanity, and Phil Szostak of Szostak Design.  Register for this important event here!

Day of the Dead 5k

Early Saturday morning on November 2nd, Matt, Erin, and families hit the road along with hundreds of other participants for the annual Day of the Dead 5K organized by one of our favorite Raleigh restaurants, Centro. The event benefits the Brentwood Boys and Girls Club of Raleigh. Matt and Erin had a great time and look forward to seeing you all there next year!

Book of the Month

This month we have selected the work of Office dA, the (unfortunately) defunct Boston-based practice formerly led by Monica Ponce de Leon and Nader Tehrani, as our book of the month.  Office dA (Contemporary World Architects) is the sole monograph of the firm’s work, showcasing their playful and often witty manipulations of standard building materials and construction methods.   Many of the projects in the book are unbuilt, but the exquisitely crafted models and pencil drawings make this book essential reading for any student of architecture.

Where We’re From: Matt

I’ve lived everywhere from Boston to the Arkansas Ozarks, in cities ranging in size from 2,000 to 600,000.  I’ve always lived close to the center of town.  I claim to be Welsh.  My parents are academics, liberals, and super energetic, creative people.  My awesome brother is way more laid back than I am, but no less intense.  He and I were taught to chase after our passions.  I attended church with my parents every Sunday as a kid.  I didn’t care about church or have a faith until I was twenty.  Both are important to me now.  I failed a period of pre-algebra in junior high and majored in math in college – my parents never gave up on me.  In my lifetime I have been inside the snow in Syracuse, mastered the big wheel skid, counted the cars of a 365-car train, skate-boarded to punk music, been unconscious, loved Volvos, caught crayfish, played home run derby with tennis balls and a wooden bat, cruised town, gotten a truck stuck in the mud, botched a drum solo in front of a crowd, loved Blow Pops, hit a 330-yard drive with a slight draw, worn my jeans tight-rolled, had a mullet, pursued love and been rewarded and hurt and rewarded again, traveled Europe on a credit card, found beauty in my work, seen the Red Sox win the pennant three times, learned from the best, put it all on the line at least once and probably twice, listened to music for days while making new things, seen perfection in my kids, been still, cried in front of my students, befriended some of the most inspiring people…all these blessings thanks to where (and who) I’m from!

Please contact us if there is any way we can help you. Happy Thanksgiving!

Best.

October 2013

Happy Halloween from in situ studio! The leaves have turned over here on North Person Street, and we are loving the fall colors! With college football in full swing and a happy ending to the World Series (Matt is still jumping for joy), we are all enjoying the autumn season! Take a look at what we’ve been up to here or on the updated website

Birthday Party

Thanks to everyone who came out for our 3rd birthday party – we had a fabulous turnout! There were kids racing along the sidewalk and people enjoying drinks from Big Boss Brewing and the Wine Feed. American Meltdown occupied the side street, and it was a wonderful night to enjoy a warm sandwich outside!

Moura Residence

We are excited to have completed schematic design for the Moura Residence! The home is designed to align with the strict square footage and material requirements of the neighborhood’s covenants. We presented the design concept to the neighborhood HOA just last week, and we expect to learn their assessment in the next week. Fingers crossed!

2013 AIA Georgia

Erin and Matt gave a talk at the 2013 AIA Georgia Annual Design Conference titled “Founding a Small Design Firm in Today’s Economy.” The talk focussed on decisions that have made in situ studio successful over the past three years, despite the economic downturn, and on lessons learned along the way. Following the presentation, there was a lively discussion about branding, technology, and the issue of specialization. Erin and Matt then attended the Design Awards Gala and reconnected with colleagues William (Bill) Carpenter, FAIA of Lightroom, Andrew Payne, Associate AIA of The Savannah College of Art and Design, Janice Wittschiebe, AIA of Richard Wittscheibe Hand, William (Bill) Stanley, FAIA of Stanley Love-Stanley, and Stephen Swicegood, FAIA of Gensler. Thanks to AIA Georgia for a wonderful event!

New Residence

We have just finished a feasibility study for a residence outside of Raleigh. The site for the home is beautifully wooded with a gradual slope, allowing us to design terraces, planes, and how to anchor an open house to the ground. We have thoroughly enjoyed working with these wonderful clients and thank them for the opportunity to help them imagine!

Modapalooza TWO Tour

A busload of modern architecture enthusiasts rolled up to the Chasen Residence earlier this month as a part of the Modapalooza TWO Tour!  Matt and Jeremy and the clients, Adam and Auditi, greeted guests as they roamed around the house and admired the light-filled spaces and cozy, well-proportioned rooms.  We had a great time discussing how we designed an affordable and sustainable house by keeping the footprint compact and taking advantage of solar orientation and prevailing winds.  Thanks to George Smart and North Carolina Modernist Homes for a wonderful event!

Book of the Month

Our Book of the Month is the latest monograph of the New York-based firm LTL Architects, Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis: Intensities.  For LTL, to “intensify” is “to call attention to something.”  In historic buildings, the firm does so through materially rich insertions that clarify spaces, while giving surfaces exuberant tactility. Their playful use of materials and gorgeous drawings were an inspiration to our office, and it was exciting to pass the book around!

Please contact us if there is any way we can help you.

Best.

September 2013

Fall is here! With the cooler weather officially here to stay, we are loving keeping our door open during the day and having new friends stop by the office. We have been enjoying way too many treats from Yellow Dog Bread Company and are delighted to watch them become the newest hot spot in town! Thanks to everyone who came out to our First Friday last month. What a huge success! Special thanks to Pie Bird for the delicious food and toWhite Whale for keeping the drinks flowing!

in situ is turning 3!
We can’t believe it has been three years since Matt and Erin started the office! We hope you can make it to the office to help celebrate all of the hard work, wonderful clients, and great relationships made in the past three years. None of it would have happened without your support! Feel free to RSVP here

Medlin Residence
Our clients approached us to design a four bedroom, four-and-a-half bath house with generous public spaces connected to the outdoors on a very constrained site in the first-ring suburbs of Raleigh. The site is long in the north-south direction, with a steep slope up from the street at the north end. A stream cuts across the north end near the street, and the associated buffer prevents construction on the northern half of the property. The extreme topography of the south end of the site prevents the house from being too far back on the property. Our design response is a compact L-shaped scheme that creates a courtyard between the house and hillside. Because of the tight footprint, not all public spaces are able to fit on the ground level. Therefore, we have located an informal den space on the upper level, and a stair connecting the living room to this den dominates the expression of the front elevation. Find out more here!

Trull Residence
The Trulls found an amazing lot in an existing neighborhood, with a view to a pond through a beautiful buffer of trees. In working with us, their goal is to design a modern home that clearly separates public from private, is universally accessible, provides views to the pond, and is situated around a courtyard such that public and private spaces can enjoy views into it. We met Michael and Sandy through the AIA Triangle Tour of Residential Architecture last year, which is a testament to the success of the tour for both architects and clients! For more information on this year’s upcoming tour on October 6th, click here.

Virginia Tech
Last month Erin and Matt were invited to be the featured IDEAS speakers in the Interior Design Program at theVirginia Tech College of Architecture and Urban Studies. The IDEAS forum provides an opportunity for students to meet in a small group with accomplished designers in the region. Visiting designers are also asked to present their work in a larger lecture format and serve as jurors on afternoon reviews. Erin and Matt had great time chatting with students about the process of starting a firm, presented their lecture, “Clean Slate,” and critiqued work in Professor Matt Wagner‘s second-year studio. They also had the opportunity to tour the most recent Virginia Tech Solar Decathlon design and see a nearly completed building on campus designed bySnøhetta.

in situ studio & the College of Design
Lots of good work coming out of the NCSU architecture studios! Oz and Matt are busy teaching three days a week this semester. Matt’s students have been building precedent models of famous buildings, including theNew Museum and Wyly Theater. The studio Oz is working with just took a trip to Charletson, SC to visit the site they have been studying. They made quick stops to a few WG Clark‘s projects, including the Mepkin Abbey and the Middleton Inn. Both are truly fantastic projects!

Residual Raleigh
Residual Raleigh now has a Facebook page! We continue to discuss and instigate conversation of how to use the 100 acres of unused or underutilized space in downtown Raleigh. We are excited that Catherine Hoffman has joined in situ studio and Brett Hautop of Gensler and truly has taken the reigns this past month. We’ve already had lots of interest through our many social media outlets. Stay tuned for more or check out our page to see how you can get involved!

Book of the Month
September’s book of the month is VJAA: Vincent James Associates Architects, which highlights the work of this thoughtful, Minneapolis-based firm, selected for the 2012 AIA Architecture Firm Award.  VJAA’s buildings are graceful pairings of simple forms with the rich materials of their sites.  Our selection of this book was spurned by our admiration and study of their Dayton House, a quiet, disciplined structure that frames interior rooms and outdoor gardens as natural extensions of each other.

Detail of the Month

Please contact us if there is any way we can help you. Can’t wait to see you on October 17!

Thanks in advance to all of our great clients who have made all of this possible! We couldn’t have done it without you!

Book of the Month

With the opening of Shigeru Ban‘s Cardboard Cathedral in Christchurch, New Zealand, we thought it appropriate for this month’s book to be Design Like You Give a Damn: Architectural Responses to Humanitarian Crises. This book highlights the greatest humanitarian challenge that architects face: providing and creating affordable shelter. Now on its fifth printing, Design Like You Give a Damn, is a compilation of innovative projects throughout the world that are socially and economically conscious. It just so happens thatSo&So Books has a copy on their shelf! Come on by to have a read!

JULY 2013

Greetings from in situ studio! What a fast-flying and exciting summer! How has July passed us already?

We are still loving our new space and are enjoying all the construction happening around us! Pop Up Ice Cream has opened, the Yellow Dog Bread Company is scheduled to open in August, and Market Restaurant is making daily progress. Make sure to stop by the office to check out what we’ve got going on when trying out all these great new places to eat! See below for more exciting office news!

2013 Matsumoto Prize

The George Matsumoto Prize is awarded to modernist houses in North Carolina by a national jury and public voting. We are excited to announce that the Chasen Residence received Second Place for both the jury and the public vote. We enjoyed a wonderful reception at the NC Center for Architecture and Design, with beverages from Foundation and Alphin Design Build, lots of laughs and great company! Thanks so much to Adam Chasen for the opportunity to make a great space and North Carolina Modernist Houses for a wonderful evening!

Breaking Ground

The Sillings Residence has officially begun construction! Currently just a large hole in the woods, we are excited that it will soon become a handsome modern farmhouse for a wonderful family! Thanks to Kemp Harris, our builder, who is out on site daily doing a fabulous job.

Recipe for Community

For the past few months we have been working with Hope Community Church to explore ideas of what community growth looks like in the Triangle. Our meetings and discussions have yielded many questions about urban infill, suburban reuse, and greenfield development and the possibilities each of these bring.  We are working hard to create a graphic way to explore different site typologies and their unique communal needs. Stay tuned as we may have the opportunity for public discussion of these ideas at the upcoming TEDxRaleighconference in October.

A New Member!

We are ecstatic to announce that we have a new Architect in the office! After months (and months!) of study, Oz has officially passed all seven of her registration exams and is now a certified Architect! Stop by 704 N. Person Street for celebratory high-fives, or to drop off bottles of wine or congratulatory chocolate!

Book of the Month

So & So Books has added a children’s section! In honor of all the little guests who have been stopping by to browse, we’ve selected Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site as the Book of the Month. A fabulous book by new author Sherri Duskey Rinker and illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld, the book walks through our favorite place– the construction site!– and calmly tucks in the machinery for the night. The perfect way to end the day! Make sure to follow So & So for their upcoming events and readings!

Please contact us if there is any way we can help you.

First Friday in July

We are hosting a First Friday event at the studio on 07 05 13! The fellas from So and So Books will be there,Pie Bird will be providing some nibbles, and we’ll have beer from Trophy Brewing. Some of our new work will be on display, and So and So’s recently ordered architecture section will have arrived. And, while you’re in the North Person neighborhood, stop by Oak City Cycling for food, beer, art, and some goodness by Slingshot Coffee. Other North Person locations like Marsh Woodwinds and Nicole’s will be open as well!  See you next week!

Residual Raleigh

Thanks to everyone who came out for the Residual Raleigh hackathon on 06 05 13! The event was a huge success, with over forty people gathering at the Raleigh Urban Design Center to rehash the presentation of the same name we first gave with Brett Hautop of Gensler on 03 20 13. The breakout sessions and discussion that followed yielded many great ideas about how to best leverage the potential of undeveloped space indowntown Raleigh. Our next step is to start an on-line public forum to record the results of the hackathon and continue the discussion. Stay tuned!

Book(s) of the Month

So and So Books has started an architecture section! We have worked closely with So and So to hand select some of what we feel are the most interesting architecture-related books of the past half-century. Currently on order are Case Study HousesDelirious New YorkDesign Like You Give a DamnDevil in the White CityThe Architecture of HappinessTowards a New Architecture, and Yes is More. We even found a children’s book,Iggy Peck Architect! The books should be in within the next couple of weeks, so stop by the studio anytime or come to our July First Friday event to browse. See you soon!

Please contact us if there is any way we can help you. Have a wonderful weekend and upcoming holiday!
