January 2015

Happy January from in situ studio! Take a look at what we’ve been up to here or on our website

Trull, Moura, Corbett, and Medlin

We are excited to announce that we are finalizing construction documents and are within a month of breaking ground on the Moura Residence! We are also nearing completion of the design phase for the Trull Residence, which promises to add a little spice to the Cary landscape.  Construction continues on the Corbett Residence, a simple, wood box overlooking a stream valley near Bahama, NC. Site visits have been muddy, but fun, and we typically swing by to pay homage to the Poland House by George Matsumoto on the way home each week. We are also enjoying our first experience working with Aiello Builders. Finally, the Medlin Residence is nearly dried in! Thanks to contractor Kemp Harris for his hard work and attention to detail!

The Ten at South Person

The Ten at South Person is 95% framed! We appreciate the hard work of Northview Construction, who are doing great work building the 10-unit row house project.  And, thanks to DHIC for giving us the opportunity to contribute to downtown Raleigh’s housing stock! If you want to know more, you may contact realtor Hilary Stokes, or simply drive by the intersection of South Person and Lenoir Streets to see the project in person.

Church on Morgan

For the past year, we have been working with Edenton Street United Methodist Church to design a renovation to a complex of buildings in downtown Raleigh that will house Church on Morgan.  Located at the intersection of Morgan and Blount Streets, the renovation will create a worship venue that can also accommodate concerts, a fellowship space and gallery that open to a corner garden, education areas, and offices.  Thanks to our entire team for their incredible work in realizing the full potential of the complex – McDonald YorkJohn A. Edwards and CompanyClyde OakLysaght + AssociatesDiversified Consulting Group, and Crawford Sprinkler.  Follow Church on Morgan via their newsletter and Twitter.

What We’re Up To Outside the Studio

Erin and her family have been spending time in their second favorite place in North Carolina (second to Raleigh, of course!) – the South Toe River Valley and the Pisgah National Forest. They have enjoyed hikes, rock hopping, trout fishing, and even a “polar plunge” into a swimming hole! A hike to the top of Mt. Mitchell is slated for this spring.

Mary has begun teaching studio again at the NCSU College of Design, working with sophomores to investigate the relationship between site and built form.  They will be heading to Charleston in February to study the city fabric and architecture in an urban context.  She has also been spending a bit of time in the woodshop, building furniture for better college basketball watching.

Matt is teaching the graduate level form studio at the NCSU College of Design again this spring, in collaboration with Don Kranbuehl of Clark Nexsen.  His family just welcomed their first dog, a Corgi puppy named Lili.  She might be the cutest mammal in history!  He is also the drummer in a new band, Poinsettia, with Vince Whitehurst(guitar + vocals) of architecture and Foundation Bar fame and Finley Lee (bass).  Follow their progress and keep track of upcoming shows via FacebookTwitter, and Instagram.

Jeremy recently completed his first volunteer experience at Exploris Elementary, teaching a module on architecture entitled “Build a Dream Home…For An Animal!”  His songwriting efforts continued through the winter—expect to hear his first recordings this spring!  And, tune your radio dial to 88.1 WKNC on Wednesdays from 6-7pm to hear him spin an eclectic set of indie rock tunes.

Book of the Month

D.J. Waldie’s Holy Land: A Suburban Memoir is a first-hand account of growing up in 1950s Lakewood, California. Lakewood was the first and largest of its kind on the west coast, a parallel to Levittown, New York, America’s original suburb.  Waldie describes Lakewood as both a dystopia and a home.  It is a place of rationality carried out to absurdity through the limitless, formal order of a grid that never yields to the hydrological and geological systems beneath it nor the individual lives upon it.  Yet, Lakewood did not become a slum, as was feared, but is described as functional, livable, and humane.  Waldie’s story describes the humanizing effect of this environment, both the ways in which we dominate and make sweeter the places we inhabit.

November 2014

Happy Thanksgiving from in situ studio! We hope you had a great one. We have had much to be thankful for this year in the way of good projects and amazing clients! We are also thankful for our friends and family who support all we do and are happy to have had the opportunity to visit some of them over the break. Matt traveled south to Huston,TX, Erin headed west to Louisville, KY, Mary trailed right behind, but stopped in Ashland, KY, and Jeremy spent quality time with his family in Raleigh, NC.

Gallo Pelon and Centro Raleigh

Over the last few months, we have been overseeing construction upstairs at Centro Raleigh and are nearing completion!  The renovated space holds a new dining room for Centro as well as North Carolina’s first mezcalbar, Gallo Pelón.  Many thanks to Courtney and Lauren of Tactile Workshop for their hard work and invaluable contributions, and to the whole team at Southeastern Properties and Development Company, who have done a beautiful job building the space.  Cheers!

Medlin Residence

We are excited to see the residence on Medlin Drive taking shape!  A big thank you to Kemp Harris, the builder, for his careful attention to detail.  Windows were delivered this week, and the custom concrete fireplace wall was poured yesterday.  The house captures spaces and views in the surrounding landscape. Check out our websitefor updated renderings!

Fred on Archdaily

a house named Fred was on ArchDaily!  The house, built by L.E. Meyers Builders, is situated on the edge of Duke Forest and is designed to capture forest views and take advantage of the natural rhythms of light and air on the site. A folded metal skin shelters the house, providing protection on the north side and opening to the south to admit generous light. The main living spaces are at the far end of the house, creating a retreat for our clients. Both active and passive sustainability strategies are incorporated into the design, including an SPFI envelope, operable windows, and a geothermal ground loop for heating and cooling. Thanks to Nicole Baxter of nBaxter Design for collaborating with us on the interiors!

October 2014

Happy Halloween from in situ studio!

And a big thank you to everyone who came by our fourth birthday party last night!  It was a pleasure to catch up with friends old and new, and to watch the kids create delightful sidewalk art (a few of us were also hit by a stray paper airplane or two).  Many thanks to Sympathy for the Deli, PieBird, Big Boss Brewing, and The Wine Feed, who provided delicious food and drinks!

Taylor Residence

The Taylor Residence, located outside Charlotte, will begin construction very soon! We are excited to be working with The Ullman Group for the first time. They have been engaged as the contractor from the beginning of the design process, and have been great collaborators since day one. We are foreseeing many trips to the Charlotte area in the coming months, and can’t wait to see this house come to life!

Corbett House

We are excited to have completed construction documents and to start construction of the Corbett House! We have enjoyed the design process working with our clients, who share our love for simple design and well-crafted details.  The design is a slender, single-story bar, oriented to bring in light and views of the surrounding forest.  Many thanks to Bob Aiello and Aiello Builders for their help and involvement in the project thus far.

The Ten at South Person

We had our first construction site meeting this week for The Ten at South Person! We are excited the project is now underway and have really enjoyed working with DHIC, Perry Cox, Hilary Stokes, and Northview Construction to get to this point! Stay up to date on construction progress here.

Please contact us if there is any way we can help you.

September 2014

We have many exciting news items this month!  Yesterday, on October 1, we celebrated our fourth birthday!  Stay tuned for a birthday-related announcement later this month.

AIA NC Design Conference

Last week, Erin, Matt, and Jeremy attended the AIA NC Design Conference in Charlotte. Erin presented a talk with Frank Harmon and Catherine Hofmann about their Activate 14 initiative, and Erin and Matt attended daily sessions, including inspiring design-centered talks by Andres Duany of DPZ, Don Kranbuehl of Clark Nexsen,Daniel Snyder, and Juan Gabriel Moreno.

The conference culminated with the Design Awards Gala, where three of our projects were recognized – Honor Awards for a house named Fred and the Farmhouse and a Merit Award for the Chasen Residence. Congratulations to all the award winners and especially to Phil Szostak Design, recipient of the 2014 NC Firm of the Year Award!

Love and Happiness

This month, in situ celebrated a wedding!  Mary got married!  Mary and Justin Conley, a scientist, Kentuckian, and “in situ” brewmaster, tied the knot last weekend at Timberlake Earth Sanctuary in Whitsett, NC.  It was a great weekend full of family, friends, sunshine, dancing, BBQ, and beer.  The two lovebirds met in 2009 when they were neighbors living on Watson Street in Raleigh.  We are so excited for them both and wish them lots of love in the coming years!

Activate 14 Urban Housing Conference

We displayed our investment in fostering a diversity of housing options in the Triangle at the Activate 14 Urban Housing Conference.  Matt’s talk highlighted the Ten at South Person, the RA 50 Accessory Dwellings, and theChasen Residence as examples of scales of dwellings that can address the needs of most people.  Jeremy and Mary’s entry in the internationally juried Live-Work Micro-Dwelling Competition, entitled “Stacking the Porch,” won the top prize!  See Jeremy and Mary’s submission, and other winning entries, here.

The Ten at South Person

The Ten at South Person is underway! Site work started a couple of weeks ago, and slabs should be poured next week. We have really enjoyed the design collaboration with Perry Cox and our client, DHIC, and are so happy to see the project now coming out of the ground. Hilary Stokes has done a wonderful job marketing the project, and all ten units are spoken for. We are looking forward to working with Northview Construction as they assemble Raleigh’s first modern, multi-unit row house project! Follow progress on our Instagram account.

AIA Triangle Tour

Join us on Saturday, October 11 from 9am to 6pm at the Chasen Residence for the AIA Triangle Residential Architecture Tour, recent winner of an AIA NC Merit Award!  Meet our clients, Adam and Auditi, and explore their home, which captures views and breezes in their tight urban lot.  We will be around to answer questions and show you around!  See all of the homes featured on the tour here, and purchase tickets here.

Please contact us if there is any way we can help you.

August 2014

We hope everyone had a wonderful Labor Day Weekend! Between the four in our office, we attended a wedding, the Bida Manda birthday party and the BREW opening; visited Umstead State Park, Ashland, Kentucky, and Saxapahaw, Carrboro, and New Bern, North Carolina; and spent quality time with family and friends!

BREW

BREW is open in Seaboard Station! We are thrilled for our clients AJ and Mike and the success they are having in their first week of business! If you haven’t done so already, stop in for coffee and a bite to eat or an evening beer. Directions here. In addition to great food and the best brewed beverages around, the space is currently adorned with paintings by our frequent collaborator, and talented landscape architect, Corey Mason. Thanks to AJ and Mike for the opportunity and to Axiom Green Build for another great collaboration!

Medlin Residence

The Medlin Residence slab and foundation are poured! We’re excited to see the house beginning to take shape on the site: the sloped site wall and L-shape of the house work in tandem to create a courtyard. Thanks to our contractor, Kemp Harris, who also built the Farmhouse.

Taylor Residence

This month, we are working on construction drawings for the Taylor Residence! The site is a wooded lot in Charlotte, with a clearing in the trees at the southern edge of a small pond. The house will be oriented north/south to capture views to the pond and a large oak tree in the clearing. It’s been wonderful to work with our clients, a young couple, and their contractor, the Ullman Group!

100 Fold Studio

Matt had an incredible opportunity this summer to be on the faculty of the Summer Studio at 100 Fold Studio inLakeside, Montana100 Fold Studio is a faith-based, not for profit architecture firm that provides design services to communities all over the world. Recent graduates who work in the studio are able to complete their internships, gain experience with project design and management, and travel to the communities for which they design. The Summer Studio is an eight-week intensive workshop that investigates the intersection between architecture and faith and gives students an opportunity to explore their vocation. The studio is organized around a design-build project, and the design process is directed by the 100 Fold Studio staff and visiting faculty. This summer’s project was a master plan for a Native American community center in Polson, Montana, and the students were able to build two storage sheds that will set a tectonic language for future building projects. Thanks to John Hudson for inviting Matt to participate and to 100 Fold Studio for their awesome work!

New School Year

Matt and Jeremy are excited to be back at the NCSU College of Design this fall!  Matt is co-teaching the comprehensive design studio, where students apply their knowledge of structural, mechanical, and environmental systems to the design of a large-scale building. Jeremy will dedicate one afternoon a week as an assistant instructor for the preliminary undergraduate studio. The past few weeks, he has helped instruct students on various sketching and hand drawing techniques, and is having a wonderful time.

Book of the Month

This month we welcomed a new team member to the office: the print edition of El Croquis #167: Smiljan Radic. This monograph of Radic’s work reports on the last ten years of his architecture and sculpture and includes an interview by Enrique Walker and analysis by Alejandro G. Crispiani. The projects are covered in beautiful detail with photographs that highlight the fragile and rugged nature of his work. Project descriptions are accompanied by images that span early concept sketches or precedent to technical details and photographs of construction. Office favorites include the Copper House 2VIK Wine Cellar, and House for the Poem of the Right Angle. Sigh.

Please contact us if there is any way we can help you.

June 2014

What an exciting June!

The highlight of the month was a photo shoot of three of our recent houses with Richard Leo Johnson of the Atlantic Archives! In addition to being an amazing photographer and super fun guy, Richard is also an accomplished guitarist. Look out for a website update with his photos in July!

We have been huddled around our office table working on numerous wonderful projects, all in different stages of design or construction, and are excited by a new project with the Museum of Life and Sciences. We have also been active in the design community: Erin helped organize a successful inaugural Activate 14 event a couple of weeks ago and represented our office at the AIA National Convention in Chicago; Jeremy taught his first architecture studio at NCSU’s Design Camp; and, next month, Matt will be teaching a design-build studio in Montana with 100 Fold Studio!

That’s all for now – we’ll be back to our normal newsletter format in July.

May 2014

Greetings from in situ studio!  Our office has grown rapidly this past month, with a new summer employee and a landscape architect who recently began sharing our space (one visitor to our office called us “rabbits”). We can’t wait for this exciting summer!

Nate Latigue

We are enthused to have a very talented young designer help us with projects this summer!  Nate Latigue joined the NCSU College of Design’s Master of Architecture program in 2013 after graduating with honors from the Appalachian State College of Fine and Applied Arts with a Bachelor in Building Science. While in Boone, NC, he worked under two NCSU College of Design alumni, Jason Miller and Chad Everhart, on two US Solar Decathlon and Europe Solar Decathlon entries, the Solar Homestead 2011 and the Maison Reciprocity 2014

A four-year letterman varsity soccer player, Nate was awarded the Goodyear Family Scholarship Award for athletic achievements, and his academic accomplishments earned him the Landon Hill Scholarship for Building Science and the International Study Abroad Scholarship to visit Austria and Italy.  Nate has been a very fun guy to work with, and we love his calming demeanor in our office.

Corey and Clyde Oak

Our friend and frequent collaborator Corey Mason recently began sharing our office space, bringing with him a great deal of energy and enthusiasm!  A very skilled landscape architect, Corey owns Clyde Oak, a landscape design and construction company that excels at creating outdoor spaces with a true sense of place.  He recently worked on the Chasen Residence, and we are excited that he will be working with several of our past and current clients on their vision for living with the outdoors!  Corey is truly one of our allies in design, and we are thrilled to be working so close with him.

Edenton Street United Methodist Church

We are pleased to announce that we are working with Clyde OakDiversified Consulting Group, and Lysaght & Associates on a new church site for Edenton Street United Methodist Church!  The project is a renovation to an historic complex of buildings located at the southwest corner of Morgan and Blount Streets in downtown Raleigh.  We are working with the building committee and our team to provide a worship venue, fellowship spaces, classrooms, and offices.  A major feature of the space will be a garden court that addresses both Morgan and Blount Streets and replaces existing parking spaces.  Beyond meeting the weekly needs of the church, the complex will engage Raleigh’s creative center, and the church hopes to offer a new music venue, gallery space for First Fridays, and a coffee shop.  Stay tuned for more!

Taylor Residence

We are thrilled to have started working with a young couple who recently purchased an amazing lot outside of Charlotte, NC. The lot is mostly wooded, with a clearing in the trees at the southern edge of small pond. The house will be oriented north/south with views to the pond and a large oak tree in the clearing. Ample outdoor spaces directly connect interior public spaces and long site walls bring the order of the architecture into the landscape. We are looking forward to further investigating the structural system and exterior materials. Stay tuned!

Corbett Residence

We are excited to announce that we are working on a new residence in Bahama, NC!  The design is a simple bar scheme that strikes a straight line across a sloping, wooded site.  The home is oriented to bring lots of natural light and views of the forest into a tidy, 1500 square-foot plan.  A roof deck makes an outdoor space within the canopy, offering views of the creek below.  The clients are inspired by simple, minimal, and efficient spaces and have brought beautiful ideas and precedents to the table.  We have loved working with them on this project.  Stay tuned!

Book of the Month

Our entire office wept when the latest monograph of Peter Zumthor arrived.  The Swiss architect is notoriously secretive and rarely publishes his work, so it was delightful to flip through the impeccably crafted volumes to unpack and understand his latest projects.  The prose is elegant, the photographs and drawings exquisite.  As always, his work is visceral, engaging the senses with evocative uses of materials and thoughtful relationships with sites.

April 2014

Greetings from in situ studio!  We are enjoying the sounds of rain on our roof and watching the leaves change to a bright, bright green. Take a look at what we’ve been up to here or on our website!

Mary Englund

We are excited to announce that Mary Englund will be joining our office tomorrow!  A native of Durham, North Carolina, Mary is an intern architect with experience in renovation and new construction projects, large and small. She is an alumna of the NCSU College of Design, from which she received a BEDA in 2009 and a Bachelor of Architecture in 2010. In recognition of her design work at NCSU, Mary received the School of Architecture Academic Achievement Award, the School of Architecture Faculty Award, the AIA Triangle Scholarship, and the Irwin E. Jones Travel Fellowship to support studies in Turkey and the Czech Republic. Following her time at NCSU, Mary practiced in the Triangle for two years before pursuing graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley, where she received the Graduate Division Award from the College of Environmental Design and completed her MArch in May 2013.

Mary worked as an intern at Weinstein Friedlein ArchitectsSzostak Design, Inc., and Duda/Paine Architectsand has taught graduate and undergraduate courses at the NCSU College of Design as an adjunct faculty member. She lives with her fiancé around the corner from the office, where she loves to cook and dream up new projects. We are so happy to have her join us!

Thirst 4 Architecture

In the words of North Carolina Modernist Houses, on Thursday, May 15 from 6-8pm, “we return to the scene of last year’s huge party at in situ studio.” It’s going to be a huge party, folks, so come on by our office! It’s a free, informal happy hour, open to anyone who loves architecture!

AIA Triangle Tour

The Chasen Residence has been selected to be of eight houses on the 2014 AIA Triangle Tour of Residential Architecture! The tour date is 10 11 14. Please join us then for an amazing day of architecture!

Century 21

The upfit we designed for Century 21 Triangle Group in North Hills is almost finished! Thanks to John Cooper and Matt Wood of Southeastern Properties and Development Company for their hard work! This new realty office was designed to establish a new format for realty offices – open to the public, driven by technology, and arranged for flexible agent use.

Carpenter Park

We are happy to announce that we are nearing completion on construction documents for a picnic and restroom shelter for Carpenter Park in Cary! The structure draws inspiration from nearby agricultural structures and will overlook a pond. Thank you to DHM Design and the Town of Cary for the opportunity to work on this project!

Erin at UNC Charlotte

Erin recently traveled to UNC Charlotte’s School of Architecture to participate in this year’s Graduate Thesis reviews. Twenty students presented work over the course of one day. The projects were incredibly inspiring and it was an honor to attend. Many thanks to UNC Charlotte for the warm hospitality and rich discussions about architectural design and research!

Activate 14

Planning for this year’s Activate 14 summer series events at the AIA NC Center for Architecture and Design is well underway! Competition entries for the design build structure to be unveiled on June 14th have been submitted and will be juried in the very near future. If you are not already, please follow Activate 14 onFacebook and Twitter. The first two events will feature keynote speakers Bryan Bell and Ashley Christensen, community engagement workshops, a silent auction of local art and goods, food, and fun!

Please contact us if there is any way we can help you.
