August 2015

Happy August from in situ studio! We have had a busy August, with 11 projects in various stages of construction and several new house projects heating up.  We are excited about the start of a new school year, the changing of the seasons, and an action-packed autumn!

We are Turning Five!

Our five-year birthday is right around the corner! While it is hard to believe all that has happened in the past five years, we are continually aware of the incredible support we have received from our clients, collaborators, friends, and family. To celebrate, we are throwing a big party for everyone on the evening of 10 01 15. Food will be provided by Person Street Pharmacy, and we’ll have wine from The Wine Feed and local beer. Mark the date on your calendar and stay tuned for specifics!

NCSU

Matt and Erin are teaching an Integrated Design Studio at the NCSU College of Design this semester! The studio is formatted to lead students through the process of creating beautiful architecture while embracing constraints such as code analysis, structural and mechanical systems, sustainability, topography, etc. Students will be designing a hypothetical institute, iCAM, of The Contemporary Art Museum in Raleigh.

100 Fold Studio

Matt visited with 100 Fold Studio again this summer for the Summer Studio. He had a an amazing time catching up with 100 Fold founders, John and Sam Hudson, presenting in situ studio’s work and discussing the life balance of owning a small practice, and helping the students detail their designs for a new bandshell in Lakeside. Thanks to the 100 Fold staff for making the trip possible. Going to Montana in the heat of the summer is a real treat! And, congrats to this year’s class of students – the project turned out great!

Project Wrap-Up

Three of our projects were finished in August – The Medlin Residence, The Corbett Residence, and the Marcos Dawson Renovation. We could not have done these projects without the tireless creativity and input of our wonderful clients – it inspiring to see how they have moved into the spaces we made together! And, we owe a debt to our collaborators: Lysaght & Associates, Kemp Harris, Inc., Aiello Builders, Inc., Original Space, Dopko Cabinetry, Clyde Oak, and Elijah Leed. We will be photographing the finished work in the fall, along with several other projects. Stay tuned!

Church on Morgan

Construction continues on Edenton Street UMC’s new church site in downtown Raleigh – Church on Morgan. The project is a renovation of a group of historic buildings at the corner of Morgan and Blount that creates a large worship space, fellowship areas, classrooms, offices, and a garden. The spaces are made to accommodate a range of events, including concerts, art shows, and food-related events. Thanks to McDonald York for their hard work in building the project and to Lysaght & Associates, Clyde Oak, John A. Edwards Company, Diversified Consulting Group, and Crawford Sprinkler for working with us to design an active new arts and fellowship venue for the church and the city!

Song of the Month: “Can I Kick it?” by A Tribe Called Quest

Fridays are for hip-hop at in situ studio lately, and A Tribe Called Quest’s 1991 single “Can I Kick It?” is a favorite tune of ours.   Built around another great song, Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side,” A Tribe Called Quest layers rock, soul, and hip-hop, sampling bits and pieces from Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band, Lonnie Smith, David Porter, and Baby Huey on top of Reed’s base line.  The song becomes beat-heavy and lyrically light, perfect for chair-dancing our way into the weekend.

June 2015

June was an exciting month, with Zach joining our team and many updates to our projects!  Take a look at what we’ve been up to on our updated website! And, if you haven’t voted yet for your favorite house for the North Carolina Modernist Houses Matsumoto prize, please do so hereFarmhouse and Clark Court are in the mix!

New Projects on the Website!

Two weeks ago, we survived scorching temperatures during a photo shoot with Richard Leo Johnson of Atlantic Archives.  The shoot captured:
  • Gallo Pelón, a mezcal bar paired with a renovation to the upstairs dining space of a downtown Raleigh favorite, Centro
  • BREW, a friendly coffee shop and hangout in Seaboard Station that serves fantastic coffee, beer, and other delights
  • the NCSU Pergola, which updates an existing bus stop to provide shelter from the rain
  • GoJoe, a mobile cart and music box for Jubala Coffee
We are thankful for great clients who allowed us to photograph the spaces we created with them. And, we love working with Richard!  In addition to being an excellent photographer, he is an amazing musician. To hear his latest album, click here.

Zach Hoffman
We are excited to announce that Zach Hoffman has joined our office as a designer! Zach graduated with Honors from Appalachian State University in 2011 with a degree in Building Science. While there, he worked on the 2011 Solar Decathlon and received the Building Science Award for Design Achievement. He completed his Masters in Architecture at the NCSU College of Design in 2014, where he worked on the Benevolence Barn in Graham County with the 2014 Design Build Studio. Zach has worked for Cannon Architects for the last 3 years, including work on the Penland 2D2 Studio. A talented designer, Zach has already cut his teeth on many of our projects.  Welcome, Zach!

Residential Projects Update
Construction on two residential projects is wrapping up this month. Millwork by Elijah Leed is almost complete at the Corbett Residence, and it looks amazing.  Many thanks to Elijah and his team for their beautiful and meticulous work.  And, special thanks to our contractor, Bob Aiello! The Medlin Residence, which has been a fantastic collaboration with contractor, Kemp Harris, cabinet maker, Jeff Dopko, and landscape architect, Corey Mason, is also nearly complete.  Thanks to everyone for your hard work!

The Ten at South Person
Construction of our first multi-family project, The Ten at South Person, is set to wrap up in the next month! The exterior finishes are underway on the project and will culminate with the installation of stained cedar tongue and groove siding on the Person Street facade. Northview Construction has done great work corralling their subcontractors to produce a truly unique housing alternative in downtown Raleigh. Thanks to DHIC for the opportunity, Hilary Stokes for marketing and selling the project, and Perry Cox for being a great design partner! We are thrilled to be this close and are excited for those who will soon be in their homes!

Poinsettia
Over the past year, guitarist and singer Vincent Whitehurst of architecture and Foundation Bar fame, bassist Finley Lee, and Matt (drums) have been cultivating the sound of their band, Poinsettia. On Sunday, the trio had their first show, at Neptune’s Parlour, opening for the incomparable Gray Young. The set for the show included twelve original songs, and over seventy-five people came out in support. For Matt, this was his first ever live performance of original music – he powered through the nerves and had a blast! You can stay abreast of Poinsettia’s exploits on FacebookInstagram, and Twitter. Photo credit © Abby Nardo.

Song of the Month: “All Under One Roof Raving” – Jamie xx
Our Song of the Month is Jamie xx’s All Under One Roof Raving, a collage of London rave and hardcore, meshed together with a melancholy steel drum riff.  We especially love the creaky beat that sneaks in midway through the song.

May 2015

How is it already the end of May? We had an action-packed month, with projects at various stages of design and construction and several significant events in the architecture community. Take a look at what we’ve been up to here or on our website

 Jubala Coffee

We are excited to announce that we have been working with Andrew Cash on Jubala Coffee’s second location in the Aloft Hotel at 2100 Hillsborough Street! Jubala is a popular north Raleigh coffee shop and a staple of our community, serving some of the city’s best coffee and delicious scratch-made biscuits and waffles. We secured permits on Tuesday and we can’t wait for a great place to get coffee near the Belltower

Corbett Residence
Construction of the Corbett Residence is weeks away from completion. We love these springtime Bahama site visits, where we get to see the hollowed, black box take its shape and lift off the falling grade. Many thanks to James and Jamie Corbett for their dedication to simplicity and to Bob Aiello of Aiello Builders for his hard work. Check out that view!

Tulane School of Architecture
Matt spent much of the first full week of May on thesis reviews at the Tulane School of Architecture. The students presented three days of compelling work to a gaggle of jurors from New Orleans and around the country. Highlights of the trip were catching up with friend and mentor Wendy Redfield, seeing her Byron Moutondesigned house, spending time with William O’Brien of WOJRAda Tolla of LOT-EK, and Todd Erlandson of(M)Arch, seeing Ammar Eloueini’s amazing house project, meeting Mel Chin, touring the Lavin-Bernick Center for University Life by VJAA, and the food, which culminated with fried-okra-laced tacos by @BlackSwanPopUp! NOLA is one fine city!

Northern Virginia AIA
Erin had the opportunity to serve on the Residential Design Awards Jury for AIA Northern Virginia this month. She served alongside Frank HarmonSara Queen, and Kenneth Hobgood, and enjoyed viewing and discussing good work on stunning sites throughout Virginia. What a great chapter!

Book of the Month: Drawing From Practice
This month, we celebrated the debut of a book we honored to be featured in – Drawing from Practice: Architects and the Meaning of Freehand – by J. Michael Welton of Architects and Artisans. Matt and Erin’s trip to the AIA National Design Conference in Atlanta culminated with a city-wide sketching walk with other architects featured in or affiliated with the book, including Frank HarmonScott RenkTom KundigEllen Cassily, and Marlon Blackwell. Trip highlights included visits to Lightroom‘s new office in Decatur, multiple hotel lobbies by John Portman, a Marcel Breuer Public Library, the now vacant State Archives and Records Building by A.Thomas Bradbury, Olmsted’s Piedmont Park, an Ethiopian dinner with Steve Luoni of the UACDC, and Daddy D’z Barbecue lunch on the way out of town.

Song of the Month
Our Song of the Month is Doug Paisley’s “Song My Love Can Sing,” a tender, organ-drenched paean to the classic, heart-on-the-sleeve Country ballad.  Fans of Gordon Lightfoot and The Band are in for a treat!

April 2015

Greetings from in situ studio! Take a look at what we’ve been up to here or on our website

St. Matthew’s

St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church’s Master Planning for a Faithful Future: 2015-2025 in Historic Hillsborough, NC is complete! We have had a wonderful time working with the Church as well as David and Terri Swanson of Swanson & Associates Landscape Architecture and Chuck Lysaght and Mark Blankinship of Lysaght & Associates. St. Matthew’s campus, just east of downtown, is one of the most beautiful, well-loved and cared-for sites in our state. It was an honor to be involved in planning and designing what the future might look like for such a sacred place. We are excited to see the master plan take form over the next ten years!

Clark Court and a house named Fred in Dwell

This month we celebrated Clark Court and a house named Fred as they garnered press and praise. Both houses were featured on Dwell online, and Clark appeared in a beautiful 8-page spread in the May print edition of Dwell Magazine. Many thanks to Dwell and to Mike Welton for telling these stories. And thanks, as always, to the clients and teams of folks who made them happen: Jeremy, Amy, and John Sanders (Clark Court) and Kevin, Laura, Nicole Baxter, and Leon Meyers (a house named Fred). Check out the articles on Clark and Fred here.

Fred wins AIA Triangle Honor Award

We are excited to announce that Fred took home an Honor Award at the 2015 Triangle Design Awards! The annual awards program, hosted by the American Institute of Architects, Triangle Section, recognizes excellence in architectural design from firms throughout a 10-county region. Fred was in good company – this year’s Honor awards also recognized Durham Central Park Cohousing (Weinstein Friedlein Architects) and NCSU’s Hunt Library (Snøhetta with Clark Nexsen). Thanks, and congratulations to all of the winners!

Song of the Month: “Huarache Lights” by Hot Chip

Witnessing Matt’s kids go absolutely bonkers when this song was played was one of the highlights of the month. The wobbling synth lines of this mid-tempo dance track sound like no other; “Huarache Lights” should be played LOUD! Hot Chip‘s new album Why Make Sense? will be out May 19.

Book of the Month: El Croquis: RCR Arquitectes

We’ve been on a shopping spree acquiring new issues of El Croquis!  One recent purchase we have made is edition 162, focusing on the work of RCR Arquitectes between 2007 and 2012. RCR is a firm in Spain organized by partners Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem, Ramón Vilalta. Like their office, which is located in an old industrial foundry in Olot in Northern Catalunya, their work reflects careful curation of existing materials, layers, textures, and colors within the contexts where they are working and thoughtful intervention of new materials and spaces. Much of their work utilizes dark materials – often steel – to offset the texture and light of older materials present. The book builds off an interview with William J. R. Curtis and captures the disarming and quiet alchemy the architects achieve between old places and new architecture.

Jeremy at Yale

In the fall, Jeremy will attend the Yale School of Architecture to pursue a post-professional Master of Architecture degree! For the past three years, Jeremy has brought his energy to many of our projects as a designer and project manager. He has produced many renderings and images for our website, has contributed significantly to the office music library, and brings his enthusiasm to everything he works on. We will miss Jeremy, and wish him the best of luck at Yale!

Please contact us if there is any way we can help you.

Mississippi State University NOMAS Symposium

Last week, Erin and Matt journeyed to Starkville, Mississippi to be the featured speakers at the Mississippi State University College of Architecture Art + Design NOMAS Symposium. The topic of the symposium, which was organized by students, was “Identity in Architecture.” Erin and Matt participated on two panel discussions sparked by Kenneth Frampton’s influential essay, Critical Regionalism, and then gave a lecture on their work that outlined the relationship between originality in architecture and the aggregate site/client/history/culture/budget context.

A special thanks to the students for arranging such an enjoyable day of ideas and discussion, to Hans Herrmannfor the tour of Starkville and his recent student-built design-build collaboration with Cory Gallo, to DirectorMichael Berk for his hospitality, to John Poros and Leah Camp for their time at the Carl Small Town Center, and to Emily McGlohnAlexis GregoryErik Herman, and Andrew Tripp for great dinner conversations! Erin and Matt can’t wait to go back!

Activate 14

Erin has been working with AIA NC’s Activate 14 on an exciting open house and panel discussion about 3D printing and its impact on the design world – from buildings to shoes! The panel discussion includes representatives from NCSU School of ArchitectureDuda Paine ArchitectsPerkins and Will, and gamil design. The event is Thursday, April 16th at 5:30pm at the AIA NC Center for Architecture and Design.  The event is free and open to the public, but participants are asked to RSVP.

Song of the Month – “My Baby Don’t Understand Me”

Music is a constant presence in our office.  Our song of the month is Natalie Prass’ exquisite “My Baby Don’t Understand Me,” a soulful slow-burner delineated by swelling movements of horns and strings.  Catch her on April 17 at the Haw River Ballroom with headliner Hiss Golden Messenger

Book of the Month: “Louis I. Kahn” by Robert McCarter

Louis Kahn casts a long shadow over many architects.  Part biography, part monograph, this tome details the development of his work and ideology through process sketches, models and consummate photographs.  AsKahn once said, “the sun never knew how great it is until it struck the side of a building,” and we tend to agree.

February 2015

Greetings from in situ studio! We have been working this month in a world transformed by snow and ice, walking to the office in our boots and staying warm with extra pots of coffee.  Thanks to all the folks we work with who’ve been battling the weather the last few weeks to keep projects on-track.  Take a look at what we’ve been up to here or on our website!

Gallo Pelón

This month we wrapped up construction at Centro Raleigh and Gallo Pelón Mezcaleria!  It has been an honor and a pleasure to be part of this beautiful, community-supported project.  Thanks especially to AngelaMarshall,Lysaght & AssociatesDiversified Consulting GroupTactile WorkshopAllied Fire Protection, and the whole team at Southeastern Properties and Development.  The space looks and feels incredible, and we can’t wait to share a drink with you there soon – official opening this month!  Cheers!

D’Loughy Residence

We’re excited to announce that the D’Loughy Residence is complete!  The project is a dramatic second story addition to a historic Raleigh home that defers to the scale of neighboring houses.  New light-filled spaces provide perched views of the home’s surroundings.  Many thanks to Original Space and Lysaght & Associates for a fun collaboration!

Museum of Life and Science

Durham’s beloved Museum of Life and Science will soon be adding a Woodland Building and Restroom Building to their campus! Construction by CT Wilson Construction Company is slated to begin any day now. It has been a pleasure working with the museum and the contractor on these two buildings in the woods, and we can’t wait to watch them come to life.

Marriott

Two weeks ago, Erin and Matt visited the Marriott corporate headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland to meet with Marriott’s internal design team and discuss a new prototype for Courtyard by Marriott. This week, Marriott confirmed in situ studio will be one of four firms in the country considered to design the new prototype. We are excited about this potential first experience in hotel design, so stay tuned!

Lecture at Mississippi State University

Erin and Matt have been invited to give a lecture at the Mississippi State University School of Architecture on March 27 as part of the Harrison Lecture Series. Their lecture will focus on recent projects and the unique contexts that have inspired variety in their work. The lecture is at 4:00 pm and will be preceded by a lunchtime panel discussion.

Song of the Month: “Chess” by Petite Noir

As an office, we listen to a constant stream of music through Matt’s stereo system.  To share our excitement, we’re debuting a new segment of our newsletter, Song of the Month.  This month, we wanted to highlight Petite Noir’s excellent single, “Chess.”  In the tradition of heartfelt new wave tracks (with hints of New Order and Bowie abound), the song builds to a sublime, emotional climax.  The video is pretty great, too!  (note: the song contains mild language at 0:57).

Detail of the Month: Trull Residence
