November 2018

Happy Thanksgiving from in situ studio!

We are cranking away on a number of big deadlines through the end of the year, including our final submission for the NCMA Art Park Visitor Center and a schematic design submission for the Eno River State Park Visitor Center. We have much to be thankful for!

Here are a few other exciting pieces of news:

Frank Harmon at So & So Books

We are thrilled that Frank Harmon is doing a reading and book signing for his new book, Native Places: Drawing as a Way to See, at So & So Books, in our shared studio/retail space. The event is tomorrow, 12 01 18, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Erin will be introducing Frank, and we expect a full house. Don’t be late!

Crane Fly

The Allin Residence, also known as Crane Fly, is underway in Orange County! We’ve had a wonderful time working with our clients, Lysaght & Associates, and Gregg Bleam to design a complex of buildings joined by a single roof and sited in response to the topography, a nearby field, views into Duke Forest, and New Hope Creek. Durham Potter of Builders Unlimited is off to a roaring start, with foundations completed last week. The house is made entirely of concrete, stone, wood, and steel and features a CLT roof structure. Stay tuned for updates on this project as construction progresses!

artspace

We’ve been working with artspace in downtown Raleigh over the past several months to envision an overhaul of their historic building that will serve to refresh their mission of allowing the public to engage with artists and enhance their robust educational programs. Our work with the staff to date has focused on creating greater visibility for the activities they support and rethinking various modes of interface between the public, artists, and staff. Artspace is known throughout the region as leader in promoting public engagement with the visual arts. Please consider supporting their important work.

Highlands Cabins

We are excited to be working on a project in Highlands, NC with an amazing out-of-state client who has a vision of creating weekend getaway cabins in the woods, along a beautiful creek. The site has already been prepared in order to install a driveway and culvert, and construction on the first phase is scheduled to begin in the spring. Please contact us to learn more about how you can rent a modern cabin in the woods on your next trip to Highlands!

October 2018

Happy Halloween from in situ studio!

October was insanely fun, with several projects wrapping up, several more starting construction, wonderful new work on the boards, teaching studios at NCSU, and the recent “deep south tour,” where we lectured to colleagues and students in Arkansas, Tennessee, and Mississippi! So, we’re keeping this month’s newsletter short and sweet.

in situ studio is Eight!.

It’s hard to believe we’ve been at it for eight years!

We owe an incredible debt to our families, friends, and the amazing design community we work alongside. We are immeasurably thankful for the clients, collaborators, and contractors who have made the beautiful projects we have shepherded possible.

To celebrate, we are throwing a party for everyone Thursday, 11 08 18, from 6:00-9:00, at our office. We’ll have wine from The Wine Feed, beer from Brewery Bhavana, and pizza from Oakwood Pizza Box. We hope you’ll join us!

RSVP.

September 2018

September was incredible! We have several project wrapping up, Fall is here, and we have an amazing array of opportunities before us. We’ve also finished our eighth year of work this month and can’t begin to express how thankful we are for the myriad people who have made our work possible.

This month’s newsletter features a book by our mentor, Frank Harmon, an amazing structure in Mocksville, NC, a project that has been perfectly executed by John C. Sanders Company, and an update on our travels, past and future. Thanks for tuning in!

in situ studio is eight!

We can’t believe it, but our office turns eight today! We are planning a party to celebrate, but are holding of until we complete a bathroom renovation by Jimmy Hubbard and Joe Rimbey, new cabinets from dopko cabinetry, new carpet from Milliken, and a new monitor to aid in client presentations (not to watch the Ryder Cup or play Angry Birds). All work should wrap up by the end of October, and we will be sending out invites to our November birthday party, tentatively scheduled for 11 08 18. We hope to see you there! RSVP.

Retreat

Last month, we set off for Virginia on our annual office retreat! First, we wandered through the ICA by Steven Holl, followed by a visit with our friends at ARCHITECTUREFIRM and a tour of Danny Macnelly’s work at Quirk Hotel. After an amazing lunch at Kuba Kuba, we headed to Charlottesville, VA to hang out with Landscape Architect Gregg Bleam at GBLA and the inspiring folks at Nelson Byrd Woltz. We finished the day with a tour of the UVA School of Architecture East Addition by W.G. Clark, whose personal house we may or may not have ogled from the street. A long car ride allowed plenty of time to talk about the last year of work, the future of the office, and our superpowers according to the Enneagram. Thanks to everyone who hosted us along the way!

in situ studio lectures

Matt and Erin are honored to have the opportunity to speak at multiple out-of-state AIA events in October! The first stop is Little Rock, AR for a lecture at the Architecture + Design Network, followed by a lecture in Hot Springs, AR for the AIA Arkansas Convention. The following week will be a quick drive west to Knoxville, TN to lecture at AIA East Tennessee’s annual Design Feed Series, and hop right back in the car to head south to Jackson, MS where they will lecture at AIA Mississippi‘sannual Mississippi Celebrates Architecture event, which is in collaboration with Mississippi State University School of Architecture. We can’t wait to report back next month!

Runnymede Ready

The Runnymede Residence is finishing up this month, and we couldn’t be more proud of how it has turned out. The house, built for a young family, has large, light-filled living spaces connected to a covered back deck and front courtyard. Private zones are accessed via hallways that use light and millwork to guide your way. The team at John C. Sanders Company has done an incredible job building the house! Special thanks to numerous great subcontractors, including Xylem Inc. and Wright Brothers Electric. We are looking forward to hardscape and landscape design from Sears Design Group in the coming weeks, and to our awesome clients to moving in!

Book of the Month

Frank Harmon’s book, Native Places: Drawing as a Way to See, has been released! Quail Ridge Books hosted a well-attended event on 09 23 18, where Frank gave a short talk about the book, how drawing has helped him see and understand the world, and the impact drawing has had on his practice. The book includes a wonderful introductory essay by Frank, along with sixty-four vignettes of “native places” taken from his popular blog of the same name. Books are available for purchase at Quail Ridge Books and on line. It’s hard to think of a better holiday gift!

nc Unsung

Our second installment of nc Unsung highlights Center Arbor near Mocksville, NC. This structure dates from 1876 and is an outdoor “sanctuary”  located on the grounds of Center United Methodist Church. The arbor was originally built for camp meetings and revivals, and is now additionally used for other community events like the Center BBQ Fair, held each spring and fall. The structure is almost entirely wood, supported by large tree trunk columns that are joined to roof members with wooden pegs. The original structure even had a wood roof, which was replaced with metal in 1923. The Center Arbor was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. We recommend making a stop next time you’re headed to the western part of the state – it’s conveniently located right of Interstate 40 at exit 168.

Please contact us if there is any way we can help you.

Summer House Update

We have been busy the last few weeks bouncing between two houses on opposite sides of Raleigh. The builder of both, Aiello Builders, has done a marvelous job and we are excited to see the Kimball Residence finish up this month, and the Yamphil House take shape this fall. The Kimball House is a cubic tower with outdoor spaces carved around the south side. It is nestled in an urban downtown lot, betwixt several modern houses from our friends at RaCo. Yamphil House is a modest box resting on a series of retaining walls, that mitigate topography on a very unusual building site. The house provides a gateway between suburban neighborhood and enchanted forest! Special thanks to our great clients, great builder, Tactile Workshop, and Lysaght and Associates. Look for more updates from both of this later this year on the work page of our website and our instagram.

Nolintha in the News

It has been a busy month for the Nolintha Residence as it made it way through several online architectural publications including Archdaily and Dwell.  We were excited to have it featured as the website splash page and as a project amongst a series of houses that they have deemed “mullet” schemes. Read more about those houses here! This has always been a special project in the office, and we are glad that others like it as much as us. We may or may not have something else in the works – stay tuned!

Fall 2018 at The College of Design

Zach and Matt are underway teaching studios at the NCSU College of Design this fall. Zach and Burak Erdim are teaching ARC 201, a sophomore studio that focuses on site. Matt is teaching the integrated studio, ARC 500/501, to fifth-year students and graduate students. He is teaching alongside Jamey Glueck of Smith Sinnett Architecture and Doug Pierson of Pod Architecture + Design. Zach’s students will be designing a “Museum of the City” in Charleston, and Matt’s students will be working on a mixed-use project in downtown Raleigh that includes a small hotel and farmers market. Stay tuned for images of the work to come in a future newsletter!

AIA California Council Residential Design Awards Jury

Erin had the honor and pleasure of serving on the AIA California Council Residential Design Awards Jury last week in San Francisco. She was joined by Mark English, AIA,  Lorcan O’Herlihy, FAIA, and Jonathan Segal, FAIA. Ninety four projects were submitted from all over California. Lively, rich discussions resulted in numerous awards for incredible projects designed by firms we look up to. Many thanks to Larry Scarpa, FAIA for the invitation (whose firm has a new book out, which we promptly added to our library)!

NCMH Movies

We’ve underwritten the North Carolina Modernist Houses Film Series this year! We are very excited about this year’s schedule of films, including films about the World’s Fair, the work of Hugh Kaptur, the work of Pritzker Prize recipient Glenn Murcutt, and the exploits of Bjarke Ingels. And, the series this year will be screened at Raleigh’s new Alamo Drafthouse, which is right across the street from Matt’s house in Longview Gardens! Tickets available here.

Jake Heffington is an architect

We could not be more pleased to announce that Jake is now an architect! Congratulations!!! This accomplishment is not only outstanding for Jake, but also for in situ studio. We are fairly certain we are the only architecture firm in the state whose entire staff is licensed architects!

Please contact us if there is any way we can help you.

July 2018

Greetings from in situ studio! This month we’re excited to be seeing the fruit of hard work, including increased fitness from a new office tradition – hourly planks, push-ups, and wall squats. This month, we’re introducing a new section to the newsletter, nc Unsung, which will feature some of our favorite obscure spots around the State. Check it out below!

Heywick House

We have started work on a house with amazing clients in Chapel Hill who recently relocated from New York City. Their new home will be located in a pine forest between several neighborhoods of varied character. Beyond functional concerns, our top priority has been siting the home to balance the need for privacy with the desires for creating good connections to the landscape and admitting as much natural light as possible. The single story design features broad overhangs, a glass hall that connects two sleeping areas, and a simple garden space that protrudes into the public wing, emphasizing a connection between the indoors and outdoors. We are aiming for an early 2019 construction start, so stay tuned!

House B.C.

We have begun work on a new ground-up house in East Raleigh with a wonderful young family who are recent transplants to Raleigh. With past experience living in Washington D.C. and New York, a major part of their lives has been spent on elevated rooftop spaces! The home we are working on together promotes outdoor living by intermingling interior and exterior space, filtering natural light through multiple layers of enclosure, and culminating with a large roof deck that overlooks downtown Raleigh! It has been such a joy getting to know them and help design their “forever home.” More very soon!

PROST!

The HUUS is in the final stages of construction, with move-in about a month away! It has been a rewarding journey from beginning to end with fantastic clients who always push ideas and pass along great wine and chocolate! Special thanks to Nathan at SEPDC, Stefan at Xylem Inc.Tactile Workshop, and the team at Bland Landscaping for the hard work as we enter the final stretch. Completed photos to come later this year!

Album of the Month

We are were thrilled earlier this year when one of the office favorites, The National, came out with a live version of one of the most listened to albums in the office over the last 8 years – Boxer. The album was recorded in November 2017 at Forest National to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the the original album‘s release. Check it out if you haven’t already. To be honest, we’d recommend any album they’ve ever produced – their music is the soundtrack for much of what we do!

nc Unsung

Our first installment of nc Unsung highlights one of our favorite places to eat! Located just off Capital Boulevard at the intersection with Hodges Street, Don Beto El Poblano is a food truck that serves very affordable, authentic tacos, tortas, sopes, and quesadillas. They have a full range of snacks and drinks to compliment this delicious fare, and are open from 7:00 am – 8:30 pm, six days a week. Best of all, they have spectacular breakfast tacos! Lines at lunch can get pretty long, so we’d recommend an early morning, early lunch, or late evening stop. Located less than five minutes from our studio, this undercover spot is becoming a haunt for everyone in our office!

Readings on Race

readingsonrace.com is now live! Though still under development, this site will eventually allow participants to RSVP, view past and upcoming events, and contact event organizers with questions and comments. Thanks to Olivia at Moogie for getting us set up! The next readings on race book club meeting is 08 23 18 at 7:00 pm and will focus on Nobody by Marc Lamont HillFirst Baptist Church has generously offered us the use of their space again, and we’re thrilled to be able to meet in an institution with such a rich racial historySo & So Books is offering Nobody at a 15% discount. E-mail readingsonrace@gmail.com with questions and RSVP here.

We would love your support – click here to vote for the Taylor Residence! Voting ends 07 02 18 at 5:00 pm.

Office Trip to NYC!

Last week our office traveled to NYC to the 2018 AIA National Conference to celebrate Erin, who is a recipient of the 2018 AIA Young Architect’s Award. Walking an average of over ten miles a day and armed with recommendations form several current clients, we ate at some amazing restaurants, heard live jazz at Small’s, saw two many amazing buildings to recount, and visited with great friends and previous in situ studio mates, Oz and Jeremy. We want to give a special shout out to a number of people and design offices who welcomed us in along the way: Adam and Matt at ARCHITECTUREFIRM, Eliza at Ennead Architects, Thomas at NBWLA, Will at Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, Jeremy at SHoP Architects, and Wilson at Tom Phifer and Partners. We had an amazing four days in the city and can’t wait to get back!

Allin Groundbreaking

Construction on the Allin Residence is about to begin! We had a great kickoff meeting on site this month with our clients, consultant Gregg Bleam Landscape Architect, and contractor Durham Potter. We are so grateful for our clients and the amazing collaboration we have enjoyed while creating a home for them in the woods. Stay tuned!

Brittany Siegert

We have a summer intern! Brittany Siegert was a student of Matt’s and Jake’s last spring, where she excelled in design, craft, and critical thinking. Brittany is from Clayton, NC, and is a rising 4th year at NCSUShe has already played a big role in the office, taking on a rockite, brass, and steel model of a pavilion at NCMA, diagrams for a new masterplanning project with the Town of Cary, and has just completed her first ever redline on a house near Duke Forest (photo above)!

Trull Residence

The Trull Residence in Cary has been featured in a number of on-line articles over the past month, including appearances in Architect MagazineDwellDezeen, and Archdaily. The house was very fun to work on because of the small, challenging site, the opportunity to work with CMU, and great clients! The photography in the articles is by Keith Isaacs, who perfectly captured the atmosphere of the house last November. Thanks to the writers for featuring our work, Chuck Lysaght’s office for their structural prowess, Bob Aiello for doing an amazing job building the house, Bob Drake of Trig Modern for help with staging, Keith for always making us look so good, and Michael and Sandy for being wonderful clients!

Readings on Race

The next readings on race book club meeting will be discussing Nobody, by Marc Lamont Hill, on Thursday, August 23 at 7:00pm. First Baptist Church has generously offered us the use of their space again, and we’re thrilled to be able to meet in an institution with such a rich racial historySo & So Books is offering Nobody at a 15% discount. Readings on race is a bimonthly book club that reads and meets to discuss books that deal with race relations in order to deepen our understanding of one another, our social, economic, and political circumstances, and the divisions we’ve seen come to light in recent years. March 2018

….and its fiiiinnnaaalllly spring at in situ studio!

 Construction begins at Singerman!

Construction has begun at the Singerman residence! We’ve had the opportunity to design an addition to a wonderful Milton Small house inside the Raleigh belt line. Concrete basement and site walls anchor this new wing, which takes cues from the windows, siding, and scale of the original house. A simple glass bridge connects the old and the new with minimal disturbance to the original construction. We’re excited to have the opportunity to study and contribute to the work of such an important figure in Raleigh’s modernist history. Thanks to Chris Neese and Wake Crossroads Builders, LLC for getting this one underway!

AIA Triangle Connections 81.2

Erin has been working with AIA Triangle ACTIVATE on an exciting 3-day architectural event called CONNECT-IONS 81.2, a 1-day design workshop that asks the question, “if Central Prison and The Governor Morehead School for the Blind were to be relocated or reimagined, what would that 81.2 acre site look like?” The workshop is bookended by talks from 5 key designers for New York City’s Hudson Yards project and a public presentation to present ideas from the workshop. Please consider attending some or all of the events – be sure to register by visiting the website!

Museum of Life and Science

In 2015, we had the opportunity to work with the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, NC on a Woodland Classroombuilt by CT Wilson Construction Co. The museum is ready to expand their woodland campus and has brought us back on board to design two new classroom buildings and masterplan for future expansion! We absolutely love working with our friends at the museum and with CT Wilson and we’re grateful to have projects with clients doing such meaningful work. Upcoming events at the museum include a dinosaur egg hunt on April 1 and a workshop on gardening for bees on April 15 – go check them out!

AIA Triangle Merit Award + Modapalooza

The Taylor Residence, completed in late 2016 in Charlotte NC, received a merit award from the American Institute of Architects Triangle Chapter  last Thursday night. We are honored to be mentioned among other incredible buildings and architects. Congrats to all of the winners! The Kimball House, located in downtown Raleigh, will be a part of North Carolina Modernist Houses‘ 2018 Modapalooza Tour. The house is currently under construction, having just completed the ‘rough-in’ stage. We are excited to show one of our projects in the midst of construction and will be on site to answer any and all questions related to the design and the construction of modern homes. The tour is sold out, but we can’t wait to see those of you who’ve secured a ticket!

Moura Residence in Midtown Magazine

We were thrilled that the Moura Residence was featured in Midtown Magazine this month! The story focuses on the relationship between the house and the site, the sequence of arrival, the process of working with an HOA, and the differences between our design and that of neighboring houses. This was a very challenging and fun project, and we are thankful to Caroline and Danilo for working with us. And, Bob Aiello did a wonderful job building the house. As an added bonus, our great friend Vanvisa Nolintha, co-owner of Bida Manda, was on the front cover of the issue! Check out the full story and the amazing photos by Keith Isaacs here.

Readings on Race

The second readings on race book club meeting will be discussing The Color of Wealth on Thursday, April 05 at 7:00pm. First Baptist Church (101 S Wilmington St.) has generously offered us the use of their space again, and we’re humbled to be able to meet in an institution with such a rich racial historySo & So Books is offering The Color of Wealth at a 15% discount. Readings on race is a bimonthly book club that reads and meets to discuss books that deal with race relations in order to deepen our understanding of one another, our social, economic, and political circumstances, and the divisions we’ve seen come to light in recent years. February 2018

in situ studio had a crazy month, check out what’s new below!

2018 Young Architects Award

Each year, the American Institute of Architects selects a group of practitioners with less than 10 years of licensure “who have shown exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to the profession early in their careers.” Erin is one of 18 architects in the US being honored this June at the National AIA Convention in New York City with the 2018 Young Architects Award! We are excited that the rest of the country now knows what we have known all along. Erin continues to reinvent the mold for what it means to be an architect, advocate, and authority for good design. The office can’t wait to travel to New York this summer to celebrate her – congrats Erin!

Fault House

Construction is about to start on a new house in west Raleigh overlooking a wooded valley just south of the Beltline. The house, which is a simple form from the exterior, is sliced diagonally in plan to separate the guest and master suites, with living areas that lead to views of the forest floor beyond. A large cantilevered deck floats off of the back of the house providing access to the adjacent tree canopies. It will be built by Bob Aiello, who has built several of our houses – stay tuned!

Public Projects on the Boards

We are thrilled to be working on several public projects, each of which will accommodate thousands of visitors every year. We’ve just finalized our contract for the Eno River State Park Visitor Center and will start design work next month. We’ve nearly completed the master planning and pricing phase for Blue Jay Point County Park in northern Wake County. We are also underway designing the Park Visitor Center for the North Carolina Museum of Art, having already completed a master plan for the Visitor Center and a future Event Building. Finally, we are working with the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, designing two new classroom buildings to complement the initial project we completed in 2015. Stay tuned for updates on these exciting projects!

Raleigh Little Theater

Renovation of the Gaddy-Goodwin Teaching Theatre Lobby is nearly complete, just in time for their first show of the season in the new space! While much of the theater was preserved, there were three primary goals with the redesign – (1) make the space accessible for all, (2) update finishes in the space, and (3) create a better connection to the back patio as well as a better visual connection to the rose garden. We are excited to celebrate the new space and recognize the original design by the late Brian Shawcroft at a rededication ceremony this weekend. The first show in the new space is Beanstalk! The Musical! opening on March 16th!

Urban Design Conference

We are proud and excited to be sponsors of the 15th Annual Urban Design Conference which will be held on Thursday, March 15th.  The conference is put on each year by NC State College of Design in partnership with The City of Raleigh. Keynote speakers include amazing landscape architects, architects, and planners who are intimately familiar with our urban areas and the topic of the year: Urban Disruption and the Equity Challenge. It’s not too late to register, so we hope to see you there!

Book of the Month – “Whatever Stasis” by Chris Tonelli

We are excited to announce that one of our bunkmates from So and So Books, Chris Tonelli, has published his second collection of poems, titled “Whatever Stasis”Barrelhouse Books has published the anthology of poems that, according to Molly Brodak, “offer cool spots of pure contemplation, while their meaning burns like “a universe/ of suns” long after the reader leaves the page.” Chris is a man of many talents: owner of So and So Books, runs Birds, LLC. poetry press, and curates the So & So Reading Series.
