Summer House Update

We have been busy the last few weeks bouncing between two houses on opposite sides of Raleigh. The builder of both, Aiello Builders, has done a marvelous job and we are excited to see the Kimball Residence finish up this month, and the Yamphil House take shape this fall. The Kimball House is a cubic tower with outdoor spaces carved around the south side. It is nestled in an urban downtown lot, betwixt several modern houses from our friends at RaCo. Yamphil House is a modest box resting on a series of retaining walls, that mitigate topography on a very unusual building site. The house provides a gateway between suburban neighborhood and enchanted forest! Special thanks to our great clients, great builder, Tactile Workshop, and Lysaght and Associates. Look for more updates from both of this later this year on the work page of our website and our instagram.

Nolintha in the News

It has been a busy month for the Nolintha Residence as it made it way through several online architectural publications including Archdaily and Dwell.  We were excited to have it featured as the website splash page and as a project amongst a series of houses that they have deemed “mullet” schemes. Read more about those houses here! This has always been a special project in the office, and we are glad that others like it as much as us. We may or may not have something else in the works – stay tuned!

Fall 2018 at The College of Design

Zach and Matt are underway teaching studios at the NCSU College of Design this fall. Zach and Burak Erdim are teaching ARC 201, a sophomore studio that focuses on site. Matt is teaching the integrated studio, ARC 500/501, to fifth-year students and graduate students. He is teaching alongside Jamey Glueck of Smith Sinnett Architecture and Doug Pierson of Pod Architecture + Design. Zach’s students will be designing a “Museum of the City” in Charleston, and Matt’s students will be working on a mixed-use project in downtown Raleigh that includes a small hotel and farmers market. Stay tuned for images of the work to come in a future newsletter!

AIA California Council Residential Design Awards Jury

Erin had the honor and pleasure of serving on the AIA California Council Residential Design Awards Jury last week in San Francisco. She was joined by Mark English, AIA,  Lorcan O’Herlihy, FAIA, and Jonathan Segal, FAIA. Ninety four projects were submitted from all over California. Lively, rich discussions resulted in numerous awards for incredible projects designed by firms we look up to. Many thanks to Larry Scarpa, FAIA for the invitation (whose firm has a new book out, which we promptly added to our library)!

NCMH Movies

We’ve underwritten the North Carolina Modernist Houses Film Series this year! We are very excited about this year’s schedule of films, including films about the World’s Fair, the work of Hugh Kaptur, the work of Pritzker Prize recipient Glenn Murcutt, and the exploits of Bjarke Ingels. And, the series this year will be screened at Raleigh’s new Alamo Drafthouse, which is right across the street from Matt’s house in Longview Gardens! Tickets available here.

Jake Heffington is an architect

We could not be more pleased to announce that Jake is now an architect! Congratulations!!! This accomplishment is not only outstanding for Jake, but also for in situ studio. We are fairly certain we are the only architecture firm in the state whose entire staff is licensed architects!

Please contact us if there is any way we can help you.

Best.
