While we had a lot of great things happening with our firm in August, we can’t help but think about our gulf shores that continue to be battered with rain from Hurricane Harvey. There are several incredible organizations like the Red Cross and the ASPCA that have already stepped in to lend a hand. Please consider making a donation!

Today is the last day of early bird registration for the AIA NC Design Conference in Wilmington, September 13-15. The conference is going to be awesome! It will include tours of new development in Wilmington (and even a kayak tour!), panel discussions and keynote speakers focused on design, economics, and development, two design charrettes in collaboration with the City of Wilmington, and the celebration of our members and design, with an awards ceremony and party on the USS North Carolina. See you in Wilmington!

AIA Triangle Tour of Homes and Modapalooza

Two of our homes will be on tours around the triangle in September! The Medlin House will be on the AIA Triangle Tour of Homes on September 23. Come out and see us, along with work from some of our friends at SOMOS, CUBE Design + Research, Szostak Design, and Shaw Design. Tickets are still available here! The Moura Residence will be on the Modapalooza tour on September 16, as a part of the Mobile Modernist Fall Tour with North Carolina Modernist Homes. This event is sold out, but put it in your calendars for next year.

Thanks to our wonderful clients, who allow people to come see and experience architecture in the Triangle!

We are thrilled to be transitioning to construction on the Kimball Residence – a beloved project in our office that has just emerged from an arduous permitting process! A simple form shelters a rich sequence of interior and exterior spaces organized around a central stair. A significant drop in topography across the site allows a first floor basement with garage and office to front the street while private program on the second floor spills out into the backyard. Public spaces on the third floor open to the southwest toward views of downtown and southwesterly summer breezes. Construction should start next week…we can’t wait!

 

 

Don’t miss this year’s Hopscotch Design Festival! We are excited to attend the incredible line up of speakers and activities spread over Thursday and Friday next week. Thanks to New Kind for organizing one of the most inspiring events in Raleigh each year. As always, don’t forget its partner, the Hopscotch Music Festival, happening the same weekend – see you out there!

This month we highlight a new release by architectural critic Sarah Williams Goldhagen – “Welcome to Your World: How the Built Environment Shapes Our Lives.” In this book, Goldhagen explores the fields of behavioral psychology, cognition, urban design and architecture (to name a few) to uncover the observable affects of the built environment on our mental, emotional, social, and physical well-being. We believe that this topic is particularly important to Raleigh during this time of significant growth and development! Goldhagen argues for more thoughtfully and better-designed cities that address the complex range of human needs as identified by a variety of scientific fields. Other books by Goldhagen include: Louis Kahn’s Situated Modernism and Anxious Modernisms.
