Between the four in our office, we attended a wedding, the Bida Manda birthday party and the BREW opening; visited Umstead State Park, Ashland, Kentucky, and Saxapahaw, Carrboro, and New Bern, North Carolina; and spent quality time with family and friends!
BREW
BREW is open in Seaboard Station! We are thrilled for our clients AJ and Mike and the success they are having in their first week of business! If you haven’t done so already, stop in for coffee and a bite to eat or an evening beer. Directions here. In addition to great food and the best brewed beverages around, the space is currently adorned with paintings by our frequent collaborator, and talented landscape architect, Corey Mason. Thanks to AJ and Mike for the opportunity and to Axiom Green Build for another great collaboration!
Medlin Residence
The Medlin Residence slab and foundation are poured! We’re excited to see the house beginning to take shape on the site: the sloped site wall and L-shape of the house work in tandem to create a courtyard. Thanks to our contractor, Kemp Harris, who also built the Farmhouse.
Taylor Residence
This month, we are working on construction drawings for the Taylor Residence! The site is a wooded lot in Charlotte, with a clearing in the trees at the southern edge of a small pond. The house will be oriented north/south to capture views to the pond and a large oak tree in the clearing. It’s been wonderful to work with our clients, a young couple, and their contractor, the Ullman Group!
100 Fold Studio
Matt had an incredible opportunity this summer to be on the faculty of the Summer Studio at 100 Fold Studio inLakeside, Montana. 100 Fold Studio is a faith-based, not for profit architecture firm that provides design services to communities all over the world. Recent graduates who work in the studio are able to complete their internships, gain experience with project design and management, and travel to the communities for which they design. The Summer Studio is an eight-week intensive workshop that investigates the intersection between architecture and faith and gives students an opportunity to explore their vocation. The studio is organized around a design-build project, and the design process is directed by the 100 Fold Studio staff and visiting faculty. This summer’s project was a master plan for a Native American community center in Polson, Montana, and the students were able to build two storage sheds that will set a tectonic language for future building projects. Thanks to John Hudson for inviting Matt to participate and to 100 Fold Studio for their awesome work!
New School Year
Matt and Jeremy are excited to be back at the NCSU College of Design this fall! Matt is co-teaching the comprehensive design studio, where students apply their knowledge of structural, mechanical, and environmental systems to the design of a large-scale building. Jeremy will dedicate one afternoon a week as an assistant instructor for the preliminary undergraduate studio. The past few weeks, he has helped instruct students on various sketching and hand drawing techniques, and is having a wonderful time.
Book of the Month
This month we welcomed a new team member to the office: the print edition of El Croquis #167: Smiljan Radic. This monograph of Radic’s work reports on the last ten years of his architecture and sculpture and includes an interview by Enrique Walker and analysis by Alejandro G. Crispiani. The projects are covered in beautiful detail with photographs that highlight the fragile and rugged nature of his work. Project descriptions are accompanied by images that span early concept sketches or precedent to technical details and photographs of construction. Office favorites include the Copper House 2, VIK Wine Cellar, and House for the Poem of the Right Angle. Sigh.
