May 2014

Greetings from in situ studio!  Our office has grown rapidly this past month, with a new summer employee and a landscape architect who recently began sharing our space (one visitor to our office called us “rabbits”). We can’t wait for this exciting summer!

Nate Latigue

We are enthused to have a very talented young designer help us with projects this summer!  Nate Latigue joined the NCSU College of Design’s Master of Architecture program in 2013 after graduating with honors from the Appalachian State College of Fine and Applied Arts with a Bachelor in Building Science. While in Boone, NC, he worked under two NCSU College of Design alumni, Jason Miller and Chad Everhart, on two US Solar Decathlon and Europe Solar Decathlon entries, the Solar Homestead 2011 and the Maison Reciprocity 2014

A four-year letterman varsity soccer player, Nate was awarded the Goodyear Family Scholarship Award for athletic achievements, and his academic accomplishments earned him the Landon Hill Scholarship for Building Science and the International Study Abroad Scholarship to visit Austria and Italy.  Nate has been a very fun guy to work with, and we love his calming demeanor in our office.

Corey and Clyde Oak

Our friend and frequent collaborator Corey Mason recently began sharing our office space, bringing with him a great deal of energy and enthusiasm!  A very skilled landscape architect, Corey owns Clyde Oak, a landscape design and construction company that excels at creating outdoor spaces with a true sense of place.  He recently worked on the Chasen Residence, and we are excited that he will be working with several of our past and current clients on their vision for living with the outdoors!  Corey is truly one of our allies in design, and we are thrilled to be working so close with him.

Edenton Street United Methodist Church

We are pleased to announce that we are working with Clyde OakDiversified Consulting Group, and Lysaght & Associates on a new church site for Edenton Street United Methodist Church!  The project is a renovation to an historic complex of buildings located at the southwest corner of Morgan and Blount Streets in downtown Raleigh.  We are working with the building committee and our team to provide a worship venue, fellowship spaces, classrooms, and offices.  A major feature of the space will be a garden court that addresses both Morgan and Blount Streets and replaces existing parking spaces.  Beyond meeting the weekly needs of the church, the complex will engage Raleigh’s creative center, and the church hopes to offer a new music venue, gallery space for First Fridays, and a coffee shop.  Stay tuned for more!

Taylor Residence

We are thrilled to have started working with a young couple who recently purchased an amazing lot outside of Charlotte, NC. The lot is mostly wooded, with a clearing in the trees at the southern edge of small pond. The house will be oriented north/south with views to the pond and a large oak tree in the clearing. Ample outdoor spaces directly connect interior public spaces and long site walls bring the order of the architecture into the landscape. We are looking forward to further investigating the structural system and exterior materials. Stay tuned!

Corbett Residence

We are excited to announce that we are working on a new residence in Bahama, NC!  The design is a simple bar scheme that strikes a straight line across a sloping, wooded site.  The home is oriented to bring lots of natural light and views of the forest into a tidy, 1500 square-foot plan.  A roof deck makes an outdoor space within the canopy, offering views of the creek below.  The clients are inspired by simple, minimal, and efficient spaces and have brought beautiful ideas and precedents to the table.  We have loved working with them on this project.  Stay tuned!

Book of the Month

Our entire office wept when the latest monograph of Peter Zumthor arrived.  The Swiss architect is notoriously secretive and rarely publishes his work, so it was delightful to flip through the impeccably crafted volumes to unpack and understand his latest projects.  The prose is elegant, the photographs and drawings exquisite.  As always, his work is visceral, engaging the senses with evocative uses of materials and thoughtful relationships with sites.

Please contact us if there is any way we can help you.

Best,
