April 2013

Greetings from in situ studio! April was a big month, in part because we moved into our new studio.  See below for information about our first event in the new space and other news!

Triangle Modernist Houses 05 16 13 Thirst for Architecture
We are looking forward to hosting our first event in the new studio! Triangle Modernist Houses organizes a monthly event called Thirst for Architecture (T4A), which allows modern design enthusiasts the opportunity to visit the studio of a contemporary design office.  We are honored to be included in the rotation for these events, which are super fun! Please join us on 05 16 13 at 6:00 pm at the new studio for the May T4A! We’ll have food, beer, wine, images of our work, and maybe moon pies to share. So and So Books will be up and running in the front of our space by then as well. Hope you can come!

City of Raleigh Environmental Award for Green Design
We are excited to announce that the Chasen Residence has been awarded a City of Raleigh Environmental Award in the area of Green Design. We’d like to thank Adam and Auditi for the opportunity to work with them to build an affordable, modern, energy efficient home in East Raleigh. The design boasts numerous sustainable features, including spray foam insulation, solar hot water for all domestic water uses, photovoltaics that provide 85% of required electricity, an efficient mini-split HVAC system, passive ventilation, and daylighting. Axiom Green Build did an incredible job building the house, aided by Prime Energy Group and Dopko Cabinetry. A highlight of the awards ceremony for Matt was getting to meet Greg Fishel, his weather hero.

Four Stages of Residential Design and Construction
a house named Fred is complete! We are so thrilled for our clients, who are now in a house tailored specifically to their daily routine! Thanks to SGI EngineeringL.E. Meyers BuildersCarrington ElectricXylem, Inc., andAlpine Roofing for their incredible work. We have broken ground on another house in Raleigh, working with theJohn C. Sanders & CompanyLysaght & Associates has designed the structure, including the concrete foundation system pictured above. The Sillings Residence should also start construction in May, once we have completed the Contract Documents. We are working with Kemp Harris to build this modern farmhouse, which is situated on a 32-acre working farm near Rolesville. And, we have just started design of the Moura House in North Raleigh on a site that affords a beautiful view of a wooded creek valley. Access to the site is via a bridge, and the main goals of the project are to maintain a tight footprint, balance the role of interior and exterior public spaces, capture views of the wooded creek valley, and leverage sustainable technologies to the greatest extent possible.

Modern Atlanta 06 01 13 Residential Tour
Two of our recent house designs, Stoneridge and the Chasen Residence, will be included in a regional homes tour organized by Modern Atlanta. The tour is on 06 01 13, with tours organized from 10:30-4:00. Our entire office will be present at the two houses to answer questions and show folks around. Learn more about the tour, buy a book about the 2013 tour, and buy tickets here. Erin and Matt will also be giving a pre-tour lecture in Charlotte at Design Within Reach on 05 31 13 at 8:00 pm. Please join us.

Bida Manda and Food Network
In only eight months, Bida Manda has caused quite a stir in downtown Raleigh! On 04 21 13, Van, Vanvisa, Chef Lon, and the rest of the Bida Manda staff teamed up with Food Network celebrity chef, Man
eet Chauhan
, the James Beard award-winning chef who has been featured on Iron Chef AmericaThe Next Iron Chef, and is now a judge on Chopped, to film footage for an upcoming reality show. We are so proud of Van and Vanvisa and thankful for the amazing work of Southeastern Properties and Development Company in building the space. And, the space would not be what it is without three tons of sticks from Bark House viaCaragreen and the design talents of Ketchup and MustardAhpeele Studio, and Spoonflower. Congrats to Bida Manda!

Carpenter ParkWe are happy to report that Carpenter Park in The Town of Cary is moving forward! We will be designing several structures for the park this summer, in collaboration with DHM Design. The park design aims to highlight the agrarian tradition in and around the town of Carpenter.

Book of the Month
April’s book of the month is The Architecture of the Barnes Foundation, which highlights the work of Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects (TWBTA) in relocating the Barnes Foundation collection previously located in the suburbs of Philadelphia to a new location in downtown Philadelphia. The move was controversial in large part because of Barnes’ explicit instruction that the collection never leave the context of the original house, a problem TWBTA solved by embracing the foundation’s history. Our selection of this book was spurred by Tod Williams’ masterful lecture at the College of Design last month and unfortunate news that another of TWBTA’s masterworks, the American Folk Art Museum, is under threat of destruction by MOMA. Learn more about theAmerican Folk Art Museum and sign the petition to save it here.

Please contact us if there is any way we can help you.

Best.
