Happy Thanksgiving from in situ studio!

We are so thankful for our clients, the committed consultants who collaborate with us, and the talented contractors who work so hard to realize the projects. We literally couldn’t do this without you!

NCBG Plant Sale Shade StructureThe Shade Structure at the North Carolina Botanical Garden had its first successful sale season. See new pictures by Richard Leo Johnson of the completed structure on our website. The NCBG Plant Sale Shade Structure has a screen system of wood laths. Double kiln-dried, pressure-treated 2x4s were cut in half on a diagonal to create 2 laths from each 2×4. The lath pattern was designed to provide a variety of shade conditions for different plant species. We highly recommend visiting the Botanical Garden to see the structure first hand, and experience the trails and natural settings of this cultural treasure!

Raleigh Backyard CottagesThe discussion of allowing Backyard Cottages (BYCs), a type of Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), in Raleigh has become an active and polarized issue. Nicole is engaged in the public conversation, and has been recently quoted in articles from the Raleigh Public Record and Indy Week. As an extension of her thesis and personal interests, she launched the website Raleigh Accessory Dwellings as a community resource on the topic. Erin is also an active voice in the conversation. She is a member of the Planning Commission and a former BYC dweller. Read Erin’s thoughts on backyard cottages on the Raleigh Accessory Dwellings News Page. Learn more and join the discussion here.

This debate has been a timely follow-up to our recent Building Trust International competition entry, RA-50, which has been featured by The Atlantic CitiesFast Co. DesigninhabitatArchdaily, and ArchitzerRA-50investigates the potential for modular living units on oversized residential lots with rear alleyways in downtown Raleigh.

Book of the MonthLA Now studies Los Angeles at the turn of the 21st century, and explores ways for addressing the challenges of future growth. The book was produced by an interdisciplinary team of film and photography students from theArt Center, graphic design students from CalArts, and architecture students from UCLA under the guidance of Thom Mayne

Working in Our CommunityMost of our office has been busy at the School of Architecture as the semester ends. Matt’s students had their final reviews this week, with Erin and Ashley on the review. The work was amazing! And, Jeremy is hard at work completing his second to last semester. Good luck, Jeremy!

Please contact us if there is any way we can help you.

Best.

Project Update: a house named FredConstruction of a house named Fred is well underway! With the framing and part of the roof in place, the final form of the house is beginning to materialize. Thanks to the amazing contractor for the house, LE Meyers Builders.

Press for RA-50This summer, in situ studio teamed with David Hill, AIA to enter the HOME Competition by Building Trust International. We were awarded an honorable mention for our entry: RA-50. Our proposal focused on proposing a new zoning district for Raleigh, RA-50, that would be populated with small, affordable, pre-fabricated residential units. Learn more about the proposal and see our competition images on our website. Since the award announcement, RA-50 has been featured on numerous blogs: ArchDailyinhabitatCo.DesignArchitizerThe Atlantic CitiesPlanetizen, and Intentionally Small. We are flattered by the press our submission has garnered!

Book of the MonthAlong the theme of small spaces, our book selection of the month is Nano House: Innovations for Small Dwellings by Phyllis Richardson. The book is filled with examples of well-designed and thoughtfully-detailed small houses, organized into topics including “mobile” and “low energy.”  It’s a perfect book to flip through for design inspiration.

Working in Our CommunityThank you to everyone that helped us celebrate in situ studio‘s 2nd birthday! Only Burger was delicious, and we enjoyed wine from The Wine Feed and beer from Big Boss Brewery. We had a blast! Also, thank you to those who stopped by Stoneridge on this month’s successful AIAT Residential Architecture Tour. It was a pleasure to see so many familiar faces, and meet many new ones!

Have A Seat has won another Sir Walter Raleigh Award! We are so proud of Erin’s involvement with AIAT andYAF in continuing this wonderful community project. In fact, through her dedication to these programs, she just received an AIAT 2012 Presidential Award. Congrats Erin!

The Raleigh chapter of Creative Mornings had another successful talk this month. Creative Mornings is a monthly lecture series with 30 chapters internationally. Nicole is on the team of organizers for our local chapter. The first talk, by Aly Khalifa of Gamil Design, is now available to watch on vimeo. This month’s talk by Wyeth Johnson of Epic Games will be posted soon, and in the meantime you can see pictures on flickr. Be sure to mark your calendars for next month’s talk by Victor Lytvinenko of Raleigh Denim!

In other news, Matt has passed the 2,000 picture threshold on Instagram, having been a proud user for only 10 months #wow! You can follow him at @m_h_griffith.
