in situ studio turns 2 years old!
On October 1, 2010, Matt and Erin founded in situ studio in the midst of the recession. Two years later, with a crew of 4 studio mates and over 20 built projects, we are glad to say we’re still going strong and loving every day! Please join us at our birthday celebration on Thursday October 11, 6-8pm, at our office for fun times and good company. Bida Manda is Open
Bida Manda Laotian Restaurant and Bar made its grand debut in downtown Raleigh. We have quickly become regulars, eager to see the space come to life with aromas of delicious food, the clanking cheers of finely-crafted cocktails, and the ambient murmur of friends and families engaged in merry times. Three Awards
September was an exciting time for competition announcements. We received an honorable mention from theBuilding Trust International for our proposal for a new model of affordable dwellings in Raleigh. Thank youDavid Hill for teaming with us! After the HOME Competition, Nicole and Jeremy had more energy left, and entered the local ReSpace Competition sponsored by Habitat ReStore, AIA Triangle, and Raleigh Architecture for Humanity. Their submission, A Reading Refuge, also won an honorable mention! Congrats to the winners, NCSU students Scott Hefner and Abe Drechsler, whose design will be constructed in early 2013.
Also, congratulations to Jeremy, this year’s 1st Place Winner of the Shawcroft Drawing Competition! We are thrilled that Jeremy was nominated for and awarded the $1,500 grand prize for his amazing talents. And, we are so glad to have him in the office. His graphic skills are behind many of the new images on the website.
Detail of the Month
The cantilevered end wall section of a house named Fred illustrates the tight skin of the roof, precise detailing, and the manner in which the eastern deck captures the view of the forest. Framing for the house is already underway!
Book of the Month
Vincent Katz organizes the history of Black Mountain College in the book Black Mountain College: Experiment in Art. The College was a modest and short-lived school of teachers and students who had a profound impact on American modern art, including Josef and Anni Albers, Buckminster Fuller, Walter Gropius, Franz Kline, andothers. Nicole helped organize this month’s inaugural Raleigh Creative Mornings event. See pictures here! It was a grand success, with a full house at CAM enjoying Aly Khalifa‘s inspiring talk on collaboration and innovation in the context of community. Matt’s semester is well underway at NCSU. We enjoyed having his class meet in our studio’s conference room for a studio session this week! His students are currently working on the design of a Raleigh Media Arts Center in downtown Raleigh. The NCSU School of Architecture and AIAT Joint Lecture Series had a strong start with a talk by Grace La of the Milwaukee firm La Dallman. See the lecture schedule for upcoming talks this semester. Also, we are excited that a new round of YAF Mentoring has begun!
