HAUS

2026 AIA Triangle Merit Award

HAUS is in a post-war suburb under a massive red oak. The house is small, has as much outdoor space as interior, and can close down when the owners are away for months at a time. Saving and relating to the oak was the driving aim of the project, and the design uses an existing foundation to support main spaces and a handful of helical piers to elevate a screened porch, yoga studio, and rear deck above grade. Interior spaces are open and wrap around the tree, with every space graced by views of the oak’s 49” diameter trunk.
