Stimmel is located on a hill above a suburban street. Existing site conditions included a house, a sunken drive to a basement garage, and three large oak trees. The design utilized the sunken drive and saved the trees. The form of the house is composed of three boxes stacked on a concrete foundation. The main living area is a negative space between two lower volumes and a wood-clad upper volume. Spaces within the house have access to views across interior and exterior spaces that create a layered perception of space and dissolve the division between inside and outside.
