House AD

Orange County, NC | 2022 | Unbuilt | 4,813 SF

House AD is in central NC meadow, surrounded by 270 degrees of agrarian landscape. The house is built from the module of a brick and is an intentionally muted backdrop to the life of a young family and the beautiful surrounding landscape. Architecture is present without authorship to make art of domestic rituals and the site. The house has a doubly-thick wall to create deep returns at openings, house utility runs, and bolster thermal separation. Scattered across a porous southern wall, a series of back-set, oversized lenses frame seasonal changes in the field and forest horizon. Openings overhead in circulation spaces capture the ever-shifting saturation of the sky. The house is a contemporary interpretation of the NC farmhouse – an anti-ornament, two-story home with a central chimney, overseer of the adjacent landscape.
