East – The Garden

The Garden targets a food insecurity in East Raleigh by infusing a produce market into the fabric of the intersection of Camden and Martin Street, anchored by flexible outdoor space. Their proposal targets flexibility in the most modular building type we have: the strip mall.
Southeast Raleigh has been historically subjected to food apartheid; there is a noticeable lack of access to fresh, affordable, and healthy foods. The Garden aims to engage the community and bring knowledge and access to healthier foods. Additionally, by re-imagining the plug-and-play nature of a previously underutilized commercial parking lot and shopping center in the core of the district, the architecture serves as the epicenter for communal outdoor events for the market, the adjacent church, and the community at-large.
