Wildwood Observation Tower

Greenville, NC | 2022 | WIP | 118’-0” Tall

Wildwood Observation Tower is a totem for the newly established Wildwood Park, north of Greenville, North Carolina. The tower is situated amongst a robust, city-initiated adventure park that includes water sports, mountain biking, hiking, and camping. The structure’s form and placement is informed by the bald cypress trees that grow in the fringes of low-lying sandy soils of the Tar River, yet refined by the technical precision of structure and intelligence of marine-craft culture. The tower is accessed via a fishing pier that culminates in a fully accessible water level overlook, while two scissor stairs satisfy complicated egress requirements and climb twelve stories to a shaded crow’s nest overlooking Pitt County, downtown Greenville, and the Tar River basin beyond. At night, the Corten steel of the tower structure emanates a warm glow, substantiating the tower’s presence in the park landscape.
