Hidden Mountain

Crumpler, NC | 2025 | WIP | 2,233 SF

Nestled along the New River on a reclaimed refuse site, this new family home establishes a thoughtful, informal relationship to the mountain context. Embedded into the hillside, the house is intentionally quiet upon arrival. Yet, on the back side towards the river, expansive, deep-set windows frame dramatic views of the water, while unfinished cedar siding mirrors the adaptive language of Appalachian barns. Inside, spaces orient around a kitchen and living area designed for hosting small gatherings. The lower level of the house is a creative studio buried in the hill, open to the river, and filled with the sounds of Doc Watson on guitar – a place for the clients to “paint their own quilt.” This space opens to a well-worn trail that leads to an existing family home next door.
