Birdseye

Stanardsville, VA | 2020 | Unbuilt | 1,405 SF

Birdseye is a small cabin between a mountain and the Conway River at the end of Middle River Road in western Virginia. The structure is a delicate, eccentric wood frame lifted above the river’s flood plain on concrete piers. Shared spaces in the house open to views of the river. Private spaces are efficient, sleeping up to eight. The tent-like roof and wood-burning stove evoke memories of a campsite. The house is a designed to be basecamp for a young family’s outdoors adventures, a provisional structure that is reduced to the minimal material means necessary for a beautiful shelter.
