NCSU Lake Raleigh Bridge
Raleigh, NC | 2015 | Unbuilt | 580 LF
NC State University’s centennial campus – originally a 334-acre masterplan designed by College of Design Dean Dr. Claude E. McKinney – has expanded to a 1,100 acre campus housing the colleges of textiles, engineering, and science. The primary cluster of academic buildings, including the Snøhetta-designed library, is separated from the University Hotel and Chancellor’s Residence by the 75-acre Lake Raleigh. The proposed bridge is a pedestrian and bike-friendly connector between the library and residence, adjacent City of Raleigh Greenway system. It provides visiting dignitaries, the Chancellor, and everyday users with a multi-modal opportunity to connect to the campus and the broader city. The serpentine dematerializing form of reflective aluminum slats subtly reorients users to the unique features of the site and fattens at specific ‘nodes’ to encourage pause, gathering, and reflection.
